Which is somewhat odd in its own right. Not to be macabre, but fatally injured boxers usually die some time after the injury occurred. Makes me wonder if there may have been some sort of congenital heart defect that resulted in the fatality, rather than damage sustained during the contest.

Never a good day when a fellow boxer dies.

I hope we can all take a moment to give our condolences.

"London-based boxer Sherif Lawal has died after he collapsed in the ring during his professional debut on Sunday.

The 29-year-old was knocked down by Portuguese opponent Malam Varela in the fourth round of a middleweight bout at Harrow Leisure Centre. Lawal received treatment from paramedics at the scene and was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.

The British Boxing Board of Control said in a statement: "Condolences to the family of Sherif Lawal following his tragic passing."

He probably died in the ring but was declared at hospital to avoid liability; F1 is similar in that they will never declare a driver dead at the track.

Yeah I mean the reality is it is very rare for the death to occur immediately. Its almost always from brain swelling which occurs in the hospital

Hellish. But it's a dangerous sport and almost surprising tragedies like this are not more common.

    RIP.

It's awful either way, and I didn't mean to diminish that, it should be noted. RIP to Lawal.
