Where do you rank Sonny Liston compared to every other boxer? This is based on purely boxing capabilities and not your personal favorite fighter in terms of personality
Strong username to post ratio. I rank Liston a little bit above guys like Whyte, Shavers and Chisora because he's around their level maybe, but he achieved more being a champion. Shannon Briggs level probably. I put him outside my top 20 HWs, but top 30 for sure.
There's boxers and there's punchers. Sonny wasn't a technician but then he didn't have to be as he was so powerful. I'd rate Sonny top 5 all time for punchers but lower on the boxing scale.
Iv been studying boxing for a while and discovered this forum earlier td when researching abt ali vs liston 2 and thought id see how the public feels about him. Also ur downplaying liston absolutely atrociously... routinely beat up a 18 year old foreman at like 50 years old and was a ****ing machine in all his matches.
Yea i mean thats fair, but as much as it sucks punching power is the primary factor in a match. Unless ur fighting someone who is WAYYYYY faster than you, as long as you get a clean shot you can win. Foreman showed us this numerous times.
In terms of around "here" I think you'll fine he's a big name when it comes to how he would fare head to head in mythical matches. I also think he's thought of more highly here than he probably by the eyes of history. I personally have him outside of the top-20 all-time. Maybe somewhere around thr 25 range but I will listen to arguments of those that have him top-20. He was a badass, for sure.
I think hes pretty solidly cemented in top 5 tbh. Genetic freak with absurd stats who was raised fighting. Born as a slave which built up his body in his youth and turned him into a knockout machine. Trained and was the idol of Foreman who is a legendary boxer and was for a long time the rival to ali whos know in the mainstream as the best boxer ever (For some God forsaken reason...)
I'm not sure Shannon was a top 30 boxer when he was active, lol. Sarcasm but I don't think he sniffs the top 30 heavyweight of all time. That's coming from someone who was a big fan and knew him personally for a little bit.
Hahahaha good one and you're probably right. Didn't give much thought tbh. Come to think about it his best wins were ancient Foreman and ancient Mercer and he got beat by his two best opponents - Lennox(no shame in that he's the GOAT) and Vitali(no shame in losing to him either). I still rank him as a pretty good H2H HW though and then there's the whole entertainment factor that he brings to the table. He's a cool guy I take it?
He was until his team didn't pay me for pr work and totally ghosted me. Not sure that was his fault personally but left a bad feeling about him for me.
at heavyweight ( all time ) top 20 Could have been higher if that rematch with Clay wasn,t fixed ( don,t think ali knew about this at the time )
