I know for many of us it's coronation week for Usyk the GOAT, but hear me out: Fury has been underestimated in EVERY big crossroads fight he's ever been in, then gone on to dominate. His first fight with Chisora he was a slight underdog and went on to win a dominant decision. His fight with Klitschko he was a 4-1 underdog and barely took a punch, winning a dominant decision. The second Wilder fight was 50-50 odds and again, Fury dominated. Fury vs Usyk is 50-50 odds................... He definitely CAN win. It seems that for a lot of people, myself included, the question is about how deteriorated Fury is from the previously mentioned Wilder II form. People don't think he can go from the slob in the Ngannou fight back to the killer in Wilder II. That's fair, but I was a vocal disbeliever when I saw a lumbering giant walking at Sefer Seferi. There didn't seem to be any way that guy would be a fit championship level fighter yet he went on to establish himself as best of the bunch prior to Usyk. To add to this, we haven't seen Fury in the ring in 7 months. He looks to be in very good condition. I feel many here are, for the fourth time, looking only at the negatives of Fury's career and ignoring his habit of overperforming in these situations.
I am picking Fury to win but I don't think your thread title is accurate. I think people remember how good he WAS not is. We have no idea how good he is. He hasn't fought a quality fighter in years and he embarrassed himself in his most recent bout.
Slyk, most ppl like to have a scapegoat. They're also front runners. On balance Fury has been good for the HW div. You'd think he's the only HW that's held up a big fight. Have we forgotten about the AJ, Wilder sad saga? Other HWs have stalled or sunk big potential fights. Even in eras long ago, some intriguing fights just never got made. In the current era it's relatively common. Difficult fight to call - just hoping for a good bout. If Fury has deteriorated from his best fights, Usyk likely wins. If not, I can see a Fury W. Usyk isn't a spring chicken, although he has taken better care of himself. Soon, we'll see.
I'm rooting for Usyk but these are valid points. I see it as a close to 50-50 fight, I expect Fury to show up in peak condition and may actually favour him slightly. Usyk needs his excellent footwork and I fear this is slowing. Without this it'll be hard to deal with Fury's size advantage.
Derek Chisora was never anything special. Derek Chisora was also knocked out by David Haye in 5 rounds something Tyson Fury could never do. Wlad was still 40 years old. Lol Fury didn't even look impressive agianst that 40 year old Wlad. Deontay Wilder is a hype who who has done nothing with his career besides beat a 50 year old Luis Ortiz. Fury was never good.
Have you forgotten Fury not rematching Wlad and sitting out for almost 3 years? Let's not forget the string of terrible opponents he has daced as champ. Have you forgotten making Usyk wait while he goes on to embarrass himself against Ngannou? This is why people dislike him.
Usyk will win. Fury has flirted with one Extra-Large serving of King Sized Meat Pies and Chips too many. Usyk wins.
Fury hasn't been that fury since he beat klitschko. Since his comeback he has done an excellent job on fooling everyone and making a fortune but on Saturday he will be exposed. Since his comeback he has ballooned between fights, carried excess skin around his waist. Had his chin exposed on numerous occasions. Has shown his powder puff power by failing to put away wallin, ngannou and the likes of pianetta. He beat wilder 3 times who is the most useless overhyped fighter of this generation and built an illusion off of that fight. He has no chance against usyk, he can't punch, hes chinny, usyk has better feet and boxing brain I'm going with usyk stoppage. Its a bit like Hatton vs Mayweather for me. You've got this undefeated British champion who everyone thinks is elite but when you truly face a p4p great it all gets exposed. Let's not get this twisted usyk is quite possibly the greatest cruiserweight of all time and will prove that he is a HW atg as well. The guy is special and fury hasn't been near his best since 2015 its all an illusion. You can make any excuses you want for his last fight but he went 12 rounds with a complete novice, got dropped and couldn't put a dent in him. It's all over for him, he will lose make his excuses to hype up the rematch before losing again and sailing off with his fortune hes conned out of the sport.
I now believe Fury is the most over hyped, overrated, under achieving fighter of recent times. Nothing, he's done, warrants any of the big talk. By this stage in his career he should have systematically beaten everyone of note, defending his title multiple times a year against the best on offer. That's what a genuine all time great does. What he's done is nothing of the sort, and for me, this is what he needs to do to actually enter that conversation; In the next 3 years, face and beat - Usyk (twice), Joshua, then some top 10 names - maybe someone like a Dubois, or Zhang, or anyone else in that mandatory/top 10 area who you want to name. Someone, that at least has a little something about them and will offer some resistance. Do that, retire undefeated, with a few good wins and the perception you cleaned out the division, and I might change my opinion. But, we all know he won't do anything of the sort. Ask yourself, how many times did Mike Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield etc...face each other? How often did Ali, Frazier, Foreman etc...face each other? The fact we are in mid 2024 and we still haven't/never saw/seen Joshua v Wilder, or Fury v Joshua, is a joke in itself. I still don't know how Wilder stayed WBC champion all those years and somehow never had to face Joshua. It literally boggles the mind. You see what I'm getting at? Who, in the last 10 years, has Fury faced that could be called elite? There's too much ducking, avoiding, excuse making, facing weak opposition, for Fury to ever be mentioned in the same breath as those greats.
I don't think these are unreasonable points. Fury does, objectively, have some good wins and has shown excellent in-ring qualities, which I frequently acknowledge. I really don't like how he has acted as champion these last few years, dodging the competition and taking part in meaningless fights. But I do try to look at things objectively. My genuine sense is that a) Fury has been overrated, and b) he is declining. And when I say overrated, I don't mean to knock him. He's obviously very good. But, to me, he hasn't even proven himself the best of this generation - let alone an ATG. For that, he needs to beat AT LEAST Usyk and AJ, the other leading lights of his generation. So I view him as still kind of a contender for best of his generation, and unproven as the best. So I don't have him currently on that highest pedestal (because he hasn't proved it), and envisioning him losing is not that hard. And, as I say, I think he has damaged his own chances of winning these hard fights now by leaving it too late. And, yes, if he wins of course I will give him credit. But that still won't count out all his poor conduct as champion or the fact he obviously didn't want to test himself and clean up the division like so many ATGs before him.
