Talking about Frank Sanchez, I always seen people that are skeptical of Cuban style fighting in the pros and especially at HW.
Not just HW, the Cuban style just does not work in pro boxing full stop. They are too tentative and amateurish, not aggressive enough
the fact there's never been a single Cuban HW champ ever, says it all. And many hyped top amateur HW's from there have turned pro (Solis, Sanchez, Gonzalez, Ortiz, etc)
I think it's the fact that their ages are probably at minimum 10 years older than what they say they are lol
It works if you're not 40 years old with a bad heart like Ortiz or 40 year old Sanchez with a dodgy knee. Ortiz was battering Wilder...but Wilder survived the onslaught then Ortiz faded into submission.
Well, if Felix Savon or Teofilo Stevenson had turn pro in their prime I think we would say different. Those Cuban heavies that turned pro was good but not close to their level.
No Cuban trainers to work on shaping the style beyond amateurs. Rigo likely remains the golden standard of its post-Soviet version. Sanchez is kind of a Frankenstein. Reynoso clearly pushed him towards a front foot high guard Mexican style, but it never really stuck. Frank might not have been able to integrate it into his style, or Eddie couldn't work with someone of more patient predispositions. Sanchez should drop some weight I reckon. Go back to his roots. Thing is, he might not get another chance at a reasonable opponent, and he likely isn't as young as advertised.
