Has Usky just demolished the myth of the modern superheavyweight?

I once saw Golovkin weeping, crying o'er his own fist. He had just used it to do something I can't say on the forum without risking a lifetime ban. I said "Yo, 'Lovkin, wutsrong, dawg?" and he had said unto me "I respect box. But I destroy box. Look at this hand. It is too small. I will never fight Joseph Louis." and I said "Yo, dawg...Louis been dead for like, ever, years and stuff." and then we wrestled until I fell asleep. It was a good night. But a sad night too. Later, I would find he meant Joe Lewis, the karate guy. Who was also much bigger. And sexier.

 

Lewis is still alive but they never fought, as of yet. But 'Lovkin still fisted plenty since then, regardless.

 

I'm responding to a different part of what you said, I agree with you about H2H ability>>> accomplishments for the exact reasons you've listed.

I meant you're being harsh in regards to Fury's H2H abilities. Fury's ACCOMPLISHMENTS don't mean all that much to me because his career is a fair bit of smoke and mirrors but I don't think he's a pathetic champion from a H2H standpoint lol, he's obviously an elite fighter from a H2H perspective all time.

 

Given it's an open division i'm taking no notice of size with my comments. There's been huge men that couldn't bust a grape and smaller men that had immense power. Carnera was considered feather fisted in his own era. Valuev was hardly frightening either.

As a heavyweight puncher Fury is fair at this point. I think he's improved.

 

Completely. Look at his game plane, leaping hooks, relentless pressure, body work.

This wasn't a tactical out boxing, he fought at a high pace that Fury couldn't live with.

No reason why Louis, Frazier, Tyson etc couldn't fight that style.

Not saying they'd win, but that style clearly worked.

 

I love these little factual anecdotes that bring some much needed colour to this otherwise dusty section of ESB.

 

Fury is far quicker than Akinwande was and taller too.

I think what really won the fight for Usyk was his stamina and recovery. Usyk put up a really fast pace and Fury was outboxing him while he could keep up. But at the halfway point Usyk was just recovering a lot faster and maintaining the pace and Fury couldn't keep up with that. When I saw Usyk storming out of his corner in round 8 I could sense Fury was ****ed.

Yeah, no offense but he definitely isn't bigger than Prime Foreman. Heavier, but definitely not bigger. One look at Foreman and Usyk tells you that. Usyk is more the size of an Ali or Holmes, but a little bloated.

 

I am tired of explaining why Marciano would never stand a chance vs a ranked 220 pounder, but you are so right.

 

OK but let's not forget that this guy fought as a middleweight in the amateurs.

That's a soberingly honest take, amongst the immediate hysteria.

Although, it wasn't just his movement and speed (for his size and dimensions) that made Fury an outlier, it was his punch resistance/recovery, too.

Few will want to remind themselves that Fury has actually shown signs of slipping fight-by-fight.

What is a starkly striking aspect of the fight last night is Fury's lack of punch-resistance.
