Fighters didn't have to way under 230 pounds back then. But they know being in better shape meant their odds of performing well increased. You had fighters like Leroy Jones who was 6'5 and weighed as much as 270, you had guys like Jimmy Abbott was who was 6'5 and weighed as much as 300 pounds. But for the most part fighters would come in the ring lighter because it was just the nature of the sport. George Foreman weighed 230 as a 19 year old amateur but weighed as low as 212 as a pro.
By modern training do you mean no training? Lol guys today can barely land 30 percent of their punches. Tyson Fury and Usyk are considered skill by their fanboys and constantly throw slapping arm punches. When I read comments like yours I think to myself "Do these people even watch boxing or do they just repeat stuff EPSN tells them" Larry Holmes, Ali, Ken Norton etc were for more skilled than any heavyweight boxing today. Hell Tony Tucker and Buster Douglas were far more skilled than any heavyweight boxing today.
I mean "modern supplementation" mainly and I'm sure recovery methods have improved much more in 50 bloody years Every other sport has advanced in 50 years,so has boxing just remained stagnant?
That's my point they could weigh more but it didn't make sense given the pace and length of fights back then
Right but other sports having either. Basketball players are worse now. Wilt Chamberlain played more minutes per game back in the 1960s than guys do today. Baseball players aren't better now. Maybe you should actually watch sports instead of repeating what EPNS tells you. Human beings don't evolve like cartoon characters. You want some more funny? This shows that you are a casual fan or a pretend boxing fan. Corrie Sanders a boxer who turned pro in the 1980's destroyed Wladimir Klitschko a boxer who turned pro in the 1990's . Yet Tyson Fury barely beat a 40 year old Wlad. Anthony Joshua struggled to beat a 41 year old Wlad. Lol if boxers were so much more talented, stronger, faster. Wouldn't both Tyson Fury and Joshua destroyed a 40 year old Wlad a fighter who turned pro in the 1990s?
Usyk weighed 200 pounds or under until he was in his 30s little kid. Ali only weighed 200 pounds when he was a teenager. Second when Ali was 33 he weighed 230 and was called fat. Lol you think Ali couldn't come in the ring with love handles and man breast? Ali fought doing a era where guys are in shape.
That's quite an inventive attempt at putting down Usyk's achievement. It was the Fury fans who said that Fury is not just any tall guy with excess fat. He is the tall guy who knows how to use that extra 40 lbs to his advantage and who has the gas tank to carry it around for 12 rounds.
Joe Joyce was knocked out 3 times a 27/28 amateur. Lol only casuals thought he had a granite chin. But yeah most people chin will shatter if you hit it enough.
Boxing isn't like other sports where past stats are now the norm like weight lighting or running, even things like football (Soccer) players are better conditioned and take much better care of themselves however this isn't the case for boxing where bigger doesn't exactly equate to better, you have things that can't be improved on like chin, stamina, boxing IQ, skills Look at it this way Mike Tyson Vs AJ who you think would win, most would favour Mike and for good reason he's faster, hits just as hard, and is better defensively Ali vs AJ, even though AJ is considerably bigger and has all the tools of modern training and nutrition he is lacking in all of these areas speed, chin, stamina, skills and ring IQ if you think Usyk dominated AJ can you imagine what Ali would do to him To sum up if someone said in the 90's an old fat 40 plus Foreman would come back and have a competitive fight with a prime Holyfield and win a world title the same arguments would be spewed and look what happened
Guys like Ali landed more punches on opponents because they had almost no defensive skills back then, it was very primitive. They were slow, plodding, no head movement, feet stuck in mud, they blocked punches with their face...They would move forward, completely wide open and get tagged relentlessly...
No head movement is absolutely insane, and it's as if you think we don't have slow plodders with minimal defense in this era lol. You don't seriously watch boxing outside this century we can tell
You're delusional...A majority of fighters had **** poor defense and almost no head movement...Fighters were very easy to hit back then...Old heads like you just won't accept facts...
