Sure I respect him. Always fought to the end. KO or be KO’d. A bit of a twat personality, but a good fighter with that power. Not an ATG but a good fighter. Would never have been champion in the one belt era.
I respect him for his work ethic in respect to his conditioning, and never coming into a fight visibly soft or overweight. And I respect him for being a part of some exciting and dramatic fights. But that's it. As a person he has no redeeming features. He's narcissistic, sadistic, stubborn, race-obsessed, manipulative, unwilling to address his own faults and perfectly happy to throw other men like Mark Brealand under the bus to protect his own fragile ego. The comments he's repeatedly made about wanting a body on his record, wanting to see his opponents have seizures in the ring, wanting their children to burst into tears because their daddy has been brutalised by him and so on are just disgusting, even if they weren't sincere and just part of some awful attempt to sound like some stone cold killer for marketing purposes, although the out of the ring assaults his posse have been involved in (not sure if Wilder was involved, but those are the people he chooses to hang out with) show that the thuggish personality isn't all an act. As a champion he was flat out garbage and a fraud sitting on a protected belt for years. He refused to unify with Joshua despite multiple opportunities (and considering their respective resumes I think we all know Joshua wasn't to blame in any part for this), ran from threats like Povetkin citing failed drug tests (even though he had no problems fighting other drug cheats like Ortiz, Fury and Stiverne), jerked legitimate challengers like Whyte around for years and still never fought him (though the WBC was mostly to blame for enabling that) and was all round a terrible excuse for a supposedly world level fighter, taking on some of the worst random dregs I've ever seen a champion defend against. Saying that, he's still the best HW America has produced in years. Not sure what that says about the US heavyweight scene though.
Classic example, maybe THE, of a cherry pick gone wrong. Justice was served on that chicanery.. trickery
I’ll respect his bravery, toughness, and (middling) accomplishments in the ring. Why wouldn’t I? I’m some soft paper pusher. I’ve never done anything difficult in my life in comparison.
Only thing i could ever fault him for and actually care is not making the AJ fight when it was time while they were both big stars. They both ended up losing and ruining a superfight. Other than that a pair of lips can say anything but the Fury fights proved he was a warrior and I ultimately think they ended his career for all intents and purposes, maybe Fury's too.
I give him the respect due to any boxer who has the guts to step into the ring as that takes a certain type of man and a quality most do not possess. But lets be honest as a champion he was a joke. Ducked Wlad, Povetkin, Joshua and Whyte. Never beat anyone I would regard as top 5 in this era, maybe not even top 10 as Ortiz's standing is very questionable due to his lack of resume. He was the biggest obstacle in regards to preventing the titles being unified for years. You can't respect how he carried himself as a champion, often making ridiculous excuses for losses as talking about wanting a body on his record. He lacked class as a champion.
He's only cashing out and the Saudis ain't giving him much of a choice to pick tomato cans. They want value for their dough
No. Beat a very weak opponent to become world champion. Continue years and years to cherry pick very low level opposition for years. During this time Wilder avoided top HWs and turned down multiple offers and chances to be one undisputed. Wilder lost title through a cherry pick gone wrong against inactive out shape Fury. Wilder then finally steps and fight proven world level guys in Parker and Zhangs and gets exposed.
I respect him because he started to box to make money to cure his sick daughter even if he lacked fundamentals. For the rest he thought with his right hand he could stop all telling during the years bunches of bullshits. However yes, why not....
