He was just trading bombs. Didn't have much of a gameplan. Was Ronny Shields telling him instructions and he wasn't listening or was Ronny Shields giving him the wrong advice ?
I’m not so familiar with his career but I would guess that he massively underestimated DD and thought he could KO him without training. It was a great fight and he did show a lot of heart so his career is far from finished, he can rebuild if he take his career serious from now on.
Hrgovic looked terrible. I thought he was better than that. He was throwing his punches from too far away and kind of lunging into range. His combinations were lumbering and uncoordinated. He kept trying for a lead uppercut from long range which is suicidal. He did land some right hands in the first couple of rounds but was out of gas by the 4th. He's seemingly forgot how to box. I swear he's gone backwards with his skills and fitness. My guess is inactivity and lack of training spelled his doom. He does have a good chin but the referee stoppage was merciful. He's done at a world class level.
He had dominated a young Dubois in sparring and arrogantly believed he could do the same with an older more experienced version.
Let's not forget he nearly had Dubois in the bag a few times. He just gassed out. It was a big turn around for DD. We saw a lack of technique and strategic errors in addition to poor gas tank. Terrible outcome for Hrgovic but at 31 he can make another run.
It's called "inexperience". He chose to fight low level opponents all his career. And got smashed in the end.
He fought like a scrub, and thought he could just overwhelm Dubois and he would quit again. He deserved to lose for underestimating another professional. Dubois probably caused lasting damage to his facial skin. He looked like the terminator at the end.
I dont think anyone saw the fight lasting 12 that's the problem Hyrgovic couldn't stand the test, hopefully he learns from his costly mistakes.
In a pre fight IV Hrgovic appeared wildly complacent. He took very little conditioning into the fight. He found a home for his right hand for a time - but lo and behold, Dubois took them surprisingly well. It seems he could turn it around with proper training and focus - but often, that is easier said than done given the specific mentality of the fighter in question. Quite dangerous to go into a fight and not be at least fit and ready - dispensing with a professional requirement at the most fundamental level. Aside from the analytics, it was a pretty damn good fight to watch, both guys put themselves out there and kept you guessing as to who would ultimately come out on top.
Being Hrgovic, he was half dead against Zhang and McKean in the second half of his fights with them. Lucky for Filip, they have crappy gas tanks as well and were blowing out of their asses too, so neither of them could properly capitalize. So when you factor in the blistering relentless pace Dubois set, when drained his already leaky gas tank twice as fast, he was running on fumes by the 5th. Then when you add in how easy he is to hit, how overrated his power has always been, how robotic, lumbering and uncoordinated he's always been, how he's always thrown his punches from from too far away, as @Malph mentioned, which has also been a pattern with him. It was just a matter of time before this happened by forcing the pace, and as I suspected, Dubois' confidence and self belief was sky high because his chin held for for 9 rounds against Usyk and Joyce and didn't let him down against Miller. I had a feeling Hrgovic's power would have minimal effect. So the big dummy was the man for the job, because he was in with another big dummy, with Dunning Kruger in terms of his level. Had Filip's match with Joyce in the WSB been a 10 rounder, it would have had a similar outcome.
He was landing at will for the first 3-4 rounds. Even Usyk didn’t land that regular on Dubois. He just needs to hone his defense (developing more of a backfoot game will help with that) and conditioning. Also should learn how to deal with the skulduggery tactics from dirty fighters like Dubois.
