Great - the only way he'll ever be persuaded to risk fighting AJ is if his reputation takes enough of a hit that he has to fight to defend his position as the second best of his era... It should be in doubt enough already, but I'm not sure it is.

I now think Ruiz 100% would have beat Wilder had they ever fought. That guy has wasted his career.

He's 34 and has a fight scheduled. A rubber with Joshua is a natural. He may get one last chance if he wants it, although, right now, no one is interested in him.

    Not dead, just going downhill.

And you're talking like nobody boxes in the USA , C'mon! When there is 3299 current pro active boxers in the USA! , more than any other country! And USA has boxing on a wide range TV channels far more than any other country, and has the best boxing trainers, best gyms. Many boxers move to the USA because of the opportunities there. There's no excuses, it's just globally other countries are getting more stronger, and other countries that traditionally didn't turn pro ..are more often now, there's more competition.

Great thread from many years ago. I also always thought Wilder was garbage. The fact that there was a time when many casuals considered him to be one of the two best heavyweights in the world is madness. He was not top 10 even on his best days. I reckon Usyk, Joshua, Fury, Parker, Dubois, Zhang, Joyce, Kabayel, Bakole, Hunter, Anderson, Hrgovic, possibly even Pulev, Sanchez and a younger Chisora would have all beaten him any time during his career.

He is not garbage, because he packed a few loses to his record, but because he was a fraud, and pretend to be legit, at least in my eyes.
He had the opportunity and plenty of time, and he always picked the easiest fights, and never really challenged himself.

I never rate a fighter based on a win/loses, but their skill alone, and their desire to show improvements, and to become a better version of themselves. Wilder never show any of that.

He always had world class speed, power, and he was very athletic. But his defense was always garbage, and while he was fast and explosive, he always telegraph his right hand. His footwork was pathetic. Jab was never any good really. And outside of the right hand, he never had any other weapon.
He doesn't have inside game, and he throws wild punches that he managed to get away against C and D level fighters.
And he was saved by the ref in Ortiz 1, when Ortiz was 39 years old already.
My main problem with Wilder and Fury is they try to fool everyone, not with their performances, but with their mouth.
And they managed to do that to a lot of people. That being said Fury is million years ahead of WIlder in terms of skill.

Calling Wilder "Garbage" is quite harsh. He was an overachiever. His great equalizer was his knockout punch which compensated for his lack of boxing skills. It served him well during his decent reign as champion.

Please leave Deontay alone, I just can't bear to see the leader of the bomb squad kicked while he's down!

TBH what the Saudis are showing is the heavyweight division was always open, if the Top 10 all fight each other once they’ll all take losses.

It is the third largest country by population in the world. The fumes of the once proud boxing tradition are fueling those numbers.
