Has to be the Barkley fight Toney dominated every second of that fight in one of the best masterclasses of all time.
Imo the McCallum fight took a reigning defending champ who also an ATG and took him to school only for the judges to rob him of a victory. Sadly it's underappreciated because of the decision but it was honestly a great performance.
Commander Vander. He was the underdog going in and not many at all liked his chances. After the bout, everyone acts like they knew he'd get the win. Before the fight?
He didn't take him to school. It was a close, competitive fight which I think Toney won, but was ruled a draw. Toney himself said McCallum was his best opponent & he learnt a lot from him.
The second one was a close competitive fight (which I think Toney clearly won as well) The first was a clear Toney win that got ruled a draw for some reason. But I think clearly beating an ATG like McCallum is impressive as hell.
You are 100% correct. A lot of people thought McCallum won the first and second fight. I personally thought Toney won two out of three with the third being really the only one that was a clear cut Toney win. It was a close and good trilogy, maybe the best series of technical fights ever.
I feel the 1st fight was close as well. Toney did dominate the 12th and nearly KO McCallum, but ran out of time. Even with that, I feel Toney only won by 1-3 points. The 2nd fight was more likely a draw as it could have gone either way.
I don't think it was close here is my scorecard pretty clear 8-4 for Toney James Toney vs Mike McCallum I Round 1 9-10 McCallum Round 2 9-10 McCallum Round 3 10-9 Toney Round 4 10-9 Toney Round 5 10-9 Toney Round 6 9-10 McCallum Round 7 10-9 Toney Round 8 10-9 Toney Round 9 9-10 McCallum Round 10 10-9 Toney Round 11 10-9 Toney Round 12 10-9 Toney 116-112 James Toney Second fight was def closer but it can't be a draw cause McCallum lost a point so he needs 7 rounds to win which I don't think you can give him 7 at most 6 I had it 7-5 Toney.
I had the 1st McCallum vs Toney fight a draw i do feel Toney had slightly the better of it though and would probably think Toney has more of an argument to shading it. But i had McCallum edging Toney in their 2nd encounter i thought McCallum was far too busy and Toney wasn't as active as he was in their 1st meeting.
Out of the 3 his fight against Barkley is near perfect. I always liked his showing against Glenn Wolfe. Underrated performance.
