He imo falls along the lines of extremely inconsistent fighter who was better than a journey man but not quite as consistent as champion material. He has wins that put some hw champs to shame. Over top rated men like
    Cleveland Williams
    Bob Baker
Nino Valdez (all these men were rated number 1 contenders I believe)
    Elskin Brothers
    Harold Johnson
    Oakland Billy Smith
    Lee Oma
Far too many to be considered a journey man. But far too inconsistent to be a top 50 fighter at hw despite top 50 worthy wins. Reminds me of trying to classify and rank the likes of Braddock and Jimmy Young.
So where do you rank him all time and how would you classify him?

1950s Peter Maher. Horrifying puncher, but had a china-chin

He was an ATG puncher with some glaring vulnerabilities. He was talented enough to pull off wins over top contenders & even an occasional HoFer, but simultaneously vulnerable enough to drop fights to mediocre/journeyman-level opposition.

I would suggest that Satterfield's career is what we might expect from someone like Julian Jackson if Jackson were fighting more frequently, across a wider weight range, & against an overall higher caliber of competition.

One of the all time great P4P punchers with an average chin ... Joe Louis said more than once he thought Satterfield was a harder puncher than Marciano

Great puncher slack defence 100% party animal, who got arrested for running girls.
I don't think Williams who was a 20 years old late sub was ever ranked no 1,nor Baker.

I think he probably was. He def lacked the skill of the latter. I think his speed was what added to it. Looked like he often caught peoples unaware w shots. Hit Jake Lamotta so hard he dented his head…according to Jake

Williams was questionable with that. He at least made it to 2. Baker im pretty sure was the number 1 when Marciano retired, and was next in line but he may have even been there briefly before. U follow rankings a lot closer then I.

With the weakness of his mandible, but the power of his punch, i think Satterfield needed to take a biblical approach to pugilism "‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

I used to watch his program every week and loved that group of guys that said "I'm Darryl, this my brother Larry and my other brother, Darnell." or whatever it was and it really cracked me up, man. He was FUNNY. I think it was called Farnum Heart Show or Love Boat or another thing like that.
