Langford disliked fighting tall fighters who were effective at managing distance and footwork, but Corbett was caught inevitably by almost every good puncher he's faced. Who wins? 20 rounds
I think the Boston Tar Baby catches up to Gentleman Jim at some point. Langford by stoppage within 10.
Yes, Sam. Before the KO drop, I think Corbett would be pedalling his bike faster than he ever did in any other fight. Literally running away before Sam catches up to him. Maybe Jim gets one of his seconds to climb into the ring mid fight to force the DQ upon himself to save Jimbo from the imminent KO.
To be fair to him he also beat a washed up Mitchell! His draw with a prime Peter Jackson was his best result I think, and his strong losing performances vs. Fitz and Jeffries merit some respect,
Corbett went 61 rounds with 197-pound Peter Jackson, 23 rounds with 218-pound Jeffries, and 14 with a light-heavyweight Fitzsimmons, all of whom could punch. And yes, 21 rounds with a past-it but still hard-punching undefeated 212-pound Sullivan. Langford was 5'7", much shorter than all of them, but he was a tremendous puncher who maintained his power throughout a contest. Of course, Corbett didn't do so well with a short Sharkey, but Sharkey was a relentless rusher who could maul and wrestle. Langford was a bit more methodical. Somehow I suspect Corbett outboxes him for the first half of the fight or more. It's rounds 15 - 20 that I'm not so sure about. I could see Langford catching and stopping him in those final rounds, but if he didn't, I'd lean towards Corbett by decision.
How many of Langford's shots to the belly do you think Old Jim would take Adam? Corbett could run ,but how many rounds would he win doing that? Sam was shorter but had an inch of reach on Corbett. Could Sullivan still hit as hard as he used to when he fought Corbett? He'd been out of the ring since forever, and its isnt like he took care of himself is it? ps I very much look forward to reading your 3rd Volume about my favourite fighter Jack Dempsey!
