Did Liston blind Ali in their first bout?

i wish i had any info. There is no doubt Muhammad's vision was bothering him though.

 

From Thomas Hauser's biography of Ali:

ANGELO DUNDEE: “Near the end of the fourth round, Cassius started having trouble with his eyes. To this day, nobody knows exactly what the problem was. It might have been liniment from Liston’s shoulder. My guess is, it was the coagulant that his corner used on the cuts. Probably, Cassius got the solution on his gloves, and when he brushed them against his forehead, it left a layer of something that trickled down with the perspiration into his eyes. [...] There was something in his eyes, definitely, because I put my pinky in the corner of his eye, and then I put it in my own eye, and it stung, it burned."

ANGELO DUNDEE: “I didn’t see too much of the fifth round; not the first minute, anyway. Everybody knew Liston was a tough guy with connections, and certain individuals had been fueling Cassius’s imagination about white people being out to destroy him. As soon as I got down the steps in the corner, my brother Jimmy ran over all excited and said, ‘Ang, show these guys you didn’t do nothing. They’re looking to do a number on you.’ Because there were two Muslims standing there, looking at me in a definitely hostile way, figuring I’d done something wrong. So I said, ‘Are you guys nuts? I want to win this thing as much as you do.’ I threw water from the bucket in my eyes. I showed them everything I could. And then I went back to watching Cassius kick Sonny Liston’s butt.”

 

The true story will never be known. All the players in the Liston corner are now dead I believe so no one s coming forward to tell us.

 

If it's worth anything, I seem to recall Ali implying that it was Liston's ugliness that blinded him. Up close, that kind of ugly gets grating as the rounds go on and starts to take its toll before you can adjust to properly seeing in its vicinity again.

 

Ali definitely did have the habit of periodically brushing his forehead with the glove (left glove?). Probably a legacy from sparring when he would do same to adjust his head gear that had shifted from time to time.

 

Yes and not only Ali, few more fighters too...but I should be quiet or his parole here would chase me and kill me.

I have always thought that Ali absolutely got blinded by something but that it was inadvertent not deliberate.
