Around 6500 tickets sold before they even go on general sale for his British title fight against Zak Chelli. Only had 4 fights on Sky and not a single other fight on the card has been announced yet. Barnsley will be rocking on fight night
Yes,I've read that as season starts the following week its to protect the pitch so they have opened the main stand and place the ring just on the edge of pitch, rather than in center circle. Which makes sense as most team stadium fights happen at end of season. I think lack of venues in Barnsley has limited the choice. The Metrodome only holds about 1-1.5k, but I'm shocked they've gone straight to Oakwell stadium after just a few fights. Think that was a massive risk, I thought he might do a few thousand or need a decent undercard to sell it out. I expected them to have him on a few cards at Sheffield or Leeds arenas and see what numbers he does whilst trying to build him up then maybe if he kept winning bring him to Oakwell. Hes a Barnsley fan and local lad, does a lot with the club and it looks like the local sports fans have bought in to him in big numbers which is great as it should make the occasion excellent. Never thought I'd get to see a boxing event at Oakwell - hopefully this could be the start of a journey, but even if its a one off (im we'll aware Chelli is a good fighter and could spoil the party!) It should be a brilliant atmosphere. Got our tickets in the presale - Roll on August 3rd!
Sold out now isn’t it? How many they letting in? My gaffer at work is from Barnsley and has no interest in boxing but knows about Simpson and is going to the fight… shows how Sky can push a fighter.
Yes, sold out in 48 hours, just hospitality left.7000 capacity due to the season kicking off the week after. I think their is a good amount of people like your gaffer, that might not be your traditional boxing fans but have bought into a local lad doing well and being part of a big event (Barnsley doesn't get a great deal of events).Think it shows How' good the promotion of him has been that these type of people know about him and are buying tickets. Just hope Chelli doesn't derail the journey and we get more nights like this
Oakwell seems like a strange venue for the British title especially if you're only using 1/3 of it's capacity. Why couldn't they have done this at the Copperbox or somewhere like that?
Simpson has sold it out in less than 48hrs. Cos he's in Barnsley. If he gets through this he will be heading shows in Yorkshire, sheff arena & leeds, maybe mancs too. Makes no sense to put him on down south. Smart move from Boxxer. If all goes well they have another headliner on their books and Simpson does have the full package, for where he's at atm and a lot of potential to go onto big things imo. He's a really nice lad and the locals are showing their support.
This content is protected This is heartbreaking. I know a couple of people who know him and they all say good things about him as a person. Wishing him well.
I know Callum Ash.as he's quite local to me. Best I can say is ,there's levels in boxing and there's levels in human beings. Callum is a level above most of us humans.
Well there's, not so nice, selfish humans. And then there's, nice unselfish humans who cares for the people around them and in their community and have no real edge to themselves. Callum is the top.end of the latter.
Looking forward to viewing this the weekend, he's got a good backstory along with a strong following. I must also confess that I have not seen him fight before, so hopefully I get a pleasant surprise as he looks the part.
Yes great to see him back out. Its a good move, I know he only fought a couple of weeks ago but it was 2 rounds and he was completely unscathed. The big Oakwell fight won't be until late May so it's great he's keeping busy in the meantime. I was thinking of going to this card anyway as I enjoy watching Azim, think the addition of Simpson means I'm probably getting a ticket now
