Absolute false. Holmes knew the fight was on the table and had a full training camp, full stop. Larry was a consumate Pro , he had a 21 month lay off since the Spinks loss, not uncommon for a 38 year old heavy, see today. Further, Holmes was 223 pounds vs Spinks 2, 226 vs Tyson and at 42 years old supposedly "better" with "no rust" lol, 233 vs Holyfield. The Holmes "got off the couch to fight Tyson" is a complete myth, he was in fighting shape but got rag dolled by a superior fighter. I bet my bottom dollar that Tyson Holmes would white wash Mercer even worse than he actually did, Mercer would not win one round.
yes, right. Berbick lost his fight with Tyson before the fight even started. It has nothing to do with "styles make fights". But now I withdraw from the discussion. Stay safe.
If you're suggesting Berbick was scared of Tyson then I don't agree with that at all, Berbick tried his best vs Tyson and didn't fight scared. It's just Berbick's aggressive style doesn't match up well with a better more skillful aggressive fighter than himself. It's like two tanks engaging in a war except one tank is bigger with a better arsenal not a good match up for Berbick. Berbick would do much better against the more cautious Tucker where Berbick could use his aggressive style much more effectively. And considering Berbick did beat undefeated versions of Thomas and Page, who at their best are as good Tucker if not better then I don't see why it's impossible for Berbick to beat Tucker.
Berbick was out there taunting Page in their fight, Tucker would've had the same thing happen to him.
That was briefly in the opening seconds of the fight Tillis was more competitive vs Tyson overall with some believing the knockdown was the difference in the fight in regards to the scoring.
There is a best seller on Amazon, it is called " Holmes excuses", 389 pages, a long read, knowing that you have the focus of a common House mouse I am unsure if you are able to finish the Book or are even able to comprehend. All the best. Yours truly.
Holmes hadn’t won a fight in three years and only had a few in that time span. I think Tyson was the best in the 80s but that wasn’t a great win. Was an ok win.
1. Larry Holmes 2. Mike Tyson (fairly close, as Holmes' peak was partly in the late 70s and doesn't count here) 3. Tim Witherspoon 4. Pinklon Thomas 5. Mike Weaver 6. Trevor Berbick 7. Greg Page 8. Carl Williams 9. James Smith 10. Michael Spinks
Berbick was overall no joke, let's not forget he solidly beat a young, hot Page...not to mention prime Pinklon
The only thing I got against him was that he was a bad person outside of the ring. I do wish that he had a rematch with Page, though, I feel as if he was a little green in their fight. As for Pinklon? Just as legitimate as his win over Page, but something seemed off about old Pinky here. Ironically, it reminds me of how Witherspoon looked in his fight against him.
Berbick raised a hell of a lot of eyebrows with those wins, plus he went the distance against a 100% prime time Holmes.
