I think Dubois is more a case of things "breaking the right way" then any brilliant plan. After the Joyce loss he took advantage of the regular belt gimmick and while losing to Usyk created just enough controversy to be kept in the mix. He was also not "supposed to win" against Hrgovic. If he loses that fight hes got 3 losses and is seen as a gatekeeper. Instead hes got 2 and is IBF champ.

I get the point but many fighters in his shoes would take the easy way out and take the path of least resistance given their financial status and the ability for their promoter to protect them. He continues to take hard fights, even in neutral or foreign territory.

True and some guys do just that and take easy fights and still get multiple shots. I remember when Arreola got the shot at Vitali after beating McCline who had lost 3 of his last 4 fights. Then after losing to Adamek and then Stiverne had his rematch with Stiverne made a vacant title shot. Then again he got a shot at Wilder after getting a gift of a decision against Kaufmann. At least Dubois is taking some risks, albeit calculated ones.

I'm not disputing that in any way. We are making separate points. I applaud him for taking the challenges, I wish more fighters with the same opportunities followed suit.

I guess in defense of wilder-arreola I distinctly remember that being a short notice fight after Povetkin tested positive and that fight was scrapped

He's an easy fighter to promote, most every fighter out there would want to fight him as he's seen to be beatable. Give him a belt and they'll be clamoring for a shot giving Dubois big money. It's a great lesson about staying busy as a fighter too.
