I was watching Eddie vs Snipes today and Freddie Pancheco called Archie Moores advice useless.
Actually watching the bout you’d think the commentators saw Snipes doing more than throwing a jab out there and missing his right hand with maybe three exceptions lol. Had Mustafa winning 7/10 rounds.

The worst commentators to me were in the 1970s when they’d bring in some actor who thought he was a tough guy to ‘show off his expertise’ and it was supposed to lend some celebrity glamor to the telecast and instead just made it insufferable with some buffoon offering nothing.

Not sure if this counts but Ali commentated Foremans 1v5 and it was the most annoying thing iv ever witnessed. The entire time hes basically giving Foremans opponents advice and shouting “PLAY THE ROPES!” Very aggravating.

I think it was the Ali-Richard Dunn fight where NBC brought in Joe Garigiola to call the fight. Joe was a baseball announcer, so why they chose him is beyond me. He just kept making baseball references as I recall. I remember specifically him saying “Ali is winding up like a relief pitcher on the mound.” Thank God it only went 5 rounds.

I cannot stand Mauro Ranallo and his ridiculous insistence on ruining every single fight he calls by screaming "Mamma mia!" like an imbecile whenever anything meaningful happens. Could you imagine that instead of Cosell's iconic "Down goes Frazier" we instead had this bellend screaming the name of his favourite musical? Ridiculous man who spoils every fight he calls.

Yes, I recall David Frost Co commenting on Ali / Foreman in Zaire .
At the conclusion he was shouting ' Ali wins by a knockdown ' !

Timothy Bradley and Andre Ward both suck.

Al Bernstein was as biased as they come, just terrible.

    Jim Lampley was awful.
    Max Kellerman is terrible.

Most often, boxers who are still active at the moment aren't too good of commentators. Just rewatched Cobb - Shavers and Cooney isn't too good of a commentator. Funnily enough, both him and Norton are at ringside commentating just months before they fought themselves.

Alex Wallau and Dan Dierdorf were truly something else doing commentary for Bowe vs Tubbs.
Three rounds in, you wouldn’t have known the fight had started as they didn’t talk about it, it was basically a biography of Bowe.
When Tubbs started making things difficult, they observed how Bowe was “wearing him down by absorbing his jabs”.

IIRC, Cooney was supposed to be fighting Shavers that night and pulled out with an injury. Cobb was a substitute.

    Agreed on these two.

Lampley was always utterly clueless about the subtleties of the sport, no matter how many years he spent watching it.

Kellerman would spend all broadcast trying to spin reasons as to why the technical boxer was really winning the fight despite what all of our eyes told us.
