No. Prime Holmes weighed in at 209 lbs. Tunney was 192. So that's only 17lbs. Less than 8 kilograms. Considerable but not 'significant'. I don't think that makes much of a difference
But never good enough to beat him ,and his own heavyweight record is a thin as a cigarette paper. Tunney can't beat Holmes with the jab and I really doubt he hits as hard as Larry with his right hand, banging a 34 years old puffed up Lhvy doesn't my cut it for me. Nor does beating faded lhvys like Levinsky and Carpentier. His heavyweight resume is almost as thin as Corbett's Tunney had quicker footwork and he would need it,he is badly out reached here.
No, predictably you picked Tunney's highest weight as Champ and Holmes lowest. Holmes was in the 212/215 region for most of his title fights. Tunney 189lbs plus Holmes is 3 inches taller with 5 inches more reach. If you dont think thats significant get in the ring with someone who outweighs you by up to 30lbs is 3 inches taller and has 5 inches longer arms! Trust me,you will know its significant!
Holmes stops him in 5 or 6. This isn't even competitive. The credit given to Tunney's heavyweight abilities is just stunning.
Holmes by decision. While Larry was no power puncher, i am willing to bet he hit harder than any of Tunney's opponents except Dempsey - and Dempsey barely landed anything on Tunney. Holmes's long jab will bother Tunney, and IMO Holmes is the bigger stronger man.
You’d get amazing odds. Tunney was teak-tough. Holmes couldn’t even get someone like Norton in trouble through fifteen rounds, let alone get near stopping him, & the vast majority of his KO’s are all late-rounders, against usually bigger but altogether softer (both physically & mentally) men than Tunney.
Teak tough against... an old, stale Dempsey who clocked in at 190? Tunney was so mentally tough he did from black fighters for almost 70 fights? Norton would destroy Tunney, a different animal altogether. Comparing some guy who fought the majority of his career at 175 to 220 pound specimen, a guy who beat Ali twice (if we are honest), is unfair to the former. Different levels.
I can agree Tunney & Norton are on different levels - just not in the way you envision it - but that’s about all. Scott LeDoux lasted longer than you’re giving Tunney.
Which real heavyweights did Tunney get in trouble ,Heeney? WOW! Tunney was only dropped twice true, but which heavyweight hitters, apart from a washed up Dempsey who had him down for 14 seconds did he ever face? Which other men with the equivalent power of a Smith Shavers Witherspoon Norton Mercer Cooney Did he face? Did he even face another heavyweight who hit as hard as Holyfield or Bey? Which good heavyweights did Tunney stop early? Do you think Tunney would ever get Norton in trouble? If you do, what is that opinion based on? He hit Heeney at will and didn't drop him until the 10th rd and Heeney was stopped on his feet in the 11th.
Who did Tunney beat that was over 200 pounds. Norton beat Ali twice. End of discussion. You want to talk about light heavyweight and beating other white light heavies, I'm all ears.
Yes. Holmes at his best was a hard man to beat, but Tunney had all the tools to get the decision over Holmes.
When did he ever prove he had the tools to beat a class 212/215lbs 6' 3, boxer with a truly great jab in his prime. Could he out jab him? Could he out hit him? Could he outmuscle him? Could he beat him on the inside? How does he do it?
Yup. Peak Holmes vs Tunney is very one sided. Spinks had to fight a top fight against a badly faded Holmes to get a decision. As a matter of fact i'd take the Spjnks from the first Holmes over Tunney and put money on it to boot.
