Thats really interesting man, do you got a source for Ali saying that? Never heard of this before.

Eh, if it did happen it wasnt very much money. Liston wasn't too rich.

The main questions are his age, circumstances behind his death, and what really happened in the Ali fights.

This is going to be funny given our discussion the other day but wikipedia. The link is the boxing rec wiki but which does not say what wikipedia claims it says but since thats another wiki it could have since been edited and it appears the wikipedia page sourced it many years ago.

Heres the excerpt from Machens wikipedia page

"Later that year he met top contender and future champion, Sonny Liston, and although he lost by a clear 12-round unanimous decision, fought a sharp hit and move match that many believed was later studied by heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali."

Like I said im cool with wikis when its not such an intellectual topic like Listons birthday which has been debated since the 60s. This works just fine, thanks man!

1- I’m pretty sure his age is a closed case.

    2- Heroine overdose

3- it’s all in front of you. He got beat up and quit.

I want to know who he learned the shoulder roll from. He started to use it midway through his career while heading through the states, and I would've liked to hear the story behind it being in his technical artillery.

My biggest question about Sonny really has nothing to do with his boxing career but the circumstances behind his death. I absolutely believe it was foul play but there's nothing definitive that can prove it. Such a sad ending for a man who (to quote an absolutely perfect line about Liston--can't remember the writer) "died the day he was born."

Hopefully his soul is at peace--I think the "Big Man" upstairs had mercy on him!!

"many believed was later studied by heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali."
So no direct statement from Ali?

    @SonnyListon>
here are some ideas for the topic:
"At what point in his career did Liston have the best chance to beat Frazier"; you set other theme parameters.

There used to be a book "Sonny Liston-The Champ Nobody Wanted" by A.S. "Doc" Young written in 1963. It used to be rare and hella expensive if you could even find it. It was reprinted awhile back and is now fairly common and not too pricey. My question is did OP buy the pricey rare version or wait until the reprint?

It seems to me that Ali just fought his usual fight vs. Liston & it worked far more effectively vs. a bigger, more ponderous opponent than the lighter but faster ones that troubled Ali prior to the Liston fights.

I seriously doubt there was any behind-the-scenes debate in Ali's camp as to whether he should make use of his extraordinary footwork or simply stand flat-footed in front of Liston & trade blows w/ him.

    Apparently not.

Either way I wonder if the lack of the Machen fight would have made a difference.
