Who was closer to their primes when they fought, Canelo or Mayweather?

Hard to say. Realistically it’s probably similar. Canelo got way better many years after and was below his best weight but Floyd was way above his best weight and was like 36

 

Even if you think Canelo was closer in terms of years Floyd was definitely closer to his prime in terms of the level he was performing at.

Skills wise & experience wise
as displayed by the easy work.

Canelo age wise as far as physical peak
But the experience level no where near where he is today because mainly that fight ironically.

 

Chronologically, Alvarez was closer to his prime but skills wise I'd go with Floyd.

 

Looking at history Canelo was closer to his prime than Mayweather. Lots of boxers are champions by 23 and some have rven beaten atgs by that age. Until recently many boxers would be done by 32 and by done I mean losing to fighters way below them. That said Mayweather always took care of his body and Canelo hadn’t fought the top fighters yet. I would say they were about the same or favor Canelo just because it’s better to be younger than older in a combat sport.

 

Canelo before he fought Floyd had very little top level fighting experience, I believe his only fight vs a top 10 ranked opponent was vs Austin Trout which he almost lost. Floyd on the other hand had almost 2 decades of experience fighting top competition. Add to the fact that Canelo was weight drained and Floyd was still p4p number 1 in the world, it's pretty clear who was closer to their prime..

That being said, Floyd would always beat Canelo, idk why he weight drained him 2 pounds, he could of won without it.

Canelo was considerably closer to his physical prime but Floyd was closer to his overall prime as Canelo was still learning.

 

Floyd was definitely closer to his prime. I have Canelo being prime in GGG2. Floyd is genuinely one of the best boxers ever and his career legitimately had several ATG performances including Corrales, Mosley, and Canelo. For me, the Mosley fight was the best I ever seen of Floyd. His chin was checked twice and he responded and recovered brilliantly, moved when he needed to, boxed brilliantly, and was offensively dangerous.

Canelo arguably lost to Lara after Floyd and a biased observer could say Canelo went 0-3 against Trout, Floyd, and Lara all in a short timespan so IDK how people can claim Canelo was prime then...he was still green, clearly.

 

What good is physical prime though if you have very little experience fighting at the top level?

 

I think Mayweather was closer to his prime

Mayweather was still pound for pound 1 and a similar level to what he was since he changed his style post Gatti fight

Canelo in 2017-2021 era was a completely different fighter to what he was before

Ring generlship, timing, defnse, ring iq, being able to cover distance etc

 

Canelo was raw and less pedded, while Mayweather was much more experienced. PBF easily outboxed Canelo, a fight that would only be reversed if Canelo had the peds, and the judges.

 

Canelo's best work came at 168, which was 5 years and 16 pounds from when/where Floyd fought him...

 

That's exactly what floyd did. Left a red hot WW division until it cooled down
