Last night on the DAZN broadcast Jai Opetaia went to town on Chris Billam-Smith for ducking him. Opetaia has told CBS team he will pay him $250,000 out of his purse to get the fight made.

Ring Magazine and IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia (25-0, 19 KOs) has offered a scathing assessment of why a unification bout against WBO titleholder Chris Billam-Smith has not come to fruition.

The 29-year-old Australian southpaw has made it clear he wants all the belts ever since he overcame a double fracture to his jaw to dethrone Ring champion Mairis Briedis (28-3, 20 KOs) via unanimous decision two years ago.

England’s Billam-Smith, 33, won the WBO strapwith a majority decision victory over Lawrence Okolie (20-1, 15 KOs) in an ugly fight in May last year. He has since spoken of his own desire for unification bouts, including against Opetaia as recently as early June, but latest reports have linked him to a bout against WBA titleholder Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (46-1, 30 KOs).

It has left Opetaia in a frustrating position as he continues to look for a suitable dance partner who can bring out his greatness.

Opetaia didn’t sound hopeful when he was interviewed at ringside on Thursday night during DAZN’s coverage of the Justis Huni versus Troy Pilcher fight in Brisbane about the potential of a Billam-Smith bout. He even offered up $250,000 of his own money to Billam-Smith to get the fight made.

“I’m ready for that fight,” Opetaia said.

“They’ve been going over saying they’re waiting for negotiations and ****. It’s ****ing bull****. He don’t want that fight.

“It’s easy done. He’d get the biggest paycheck he’s ever had. He’ll be on the biggest stage he’s ever been on. It’s a no-brainer to take, but the only reason they wouldn’t take it is if they’re ducking.

“The offer’s there, we’ve made the offer. If he’s not taking it, he’s ducking the fight.”

Opetaia’s manager, Mick Francis, is equally bemused by Billam-Smith’s apparent reluctance to face his fighter.

“Jai wants to get this fight made more than anything else,” said Francis.

“But we’ve heard nothing but crickets since the offer went through. It seems like Billam-Smith might be looking to go to America to fight instead. Ben Shalom’s boxers have a history of ducking Jai, so we’re not surprised.

“Jai wants to fight the best there is and Chris is making excuses about wanting to box in America instead. This narrative started in the post-fight interview after he beat Richard Riakporhe and it hasn’t stopped.”

Days out from his title defense against Riakporhe (17-1, 13 KOs) early last month, Billam-Smith made all the right noises when asked about an Opetaia matchup, but with one caveat – the Aussie would need to pick up more hardware first.

“I think it’s the biggest fight in the division at the moment,” Billam-Smith told Sky Sports. “It would be great to get that fight done. It would be amazing if we could do it for an undisputed world title, for all four of the belts.

“I think that’s the big one. I’ve got a job to do, but down the line, definitely, it’s a huge fight and the biggest fight in the division.

“He ticks a lot of boxes; he’s got good footwork, really good timing, good speed, good shot selection there. He’s super tough as well, obviously – you’ve seen him fight with a broken jaw.

“He’s a really, really talented fighter and, like I said, ticks a lot of boxes. So it would be great if we could fight down the line.”

Opetaia is itching to get back in the ring following his second points win over Latvian veteran Briedis in Saudi Arabia in May.

Speaking immediately after the fight, Opetaia made it clear who he wanted his next opponent to be.

“I want the WBO next,” he said. “I want the winner of Chris Billam-Smith and [Richard Riakporhe], and after that we’re gonna collect the rest.”

As of right now, that bout is unlikely to happen any time soon.

I mean, there are two other champs. Mikaeljan would be an easier fight, and he could take that title and build momentum. Ramirez is a better fight.

Why does it have to be CBS?

I like Jai, but everything about him is one note off--he's just not quite as he is being hyped.

Um, because CBS is the bigger fight.

There’s nothing about Opetaia that is “one note off” and he is exactly as is being hyped. CBS is the name he wants, a fight like that for both guys is massive given the historic England vs Australian rivalry across all sports (and pretty much everything else for that matter). It’s the biggest fight that can be made at cruiserweight right now. And by some considerable margin.

The only possible reason CBS doesn’t want that fight is because he is petrified. And he should be.

Opetaia will give CBS a dose that will make him wish he was born a woman.

CBS knows that Opetaia gives him a career ending beating.

There are levels to this game and CBS isn’t on the same level as him.

Yes, but why not work towards the bigger fight? Force the issue by collecting an extra belt or two. If he is really that good, this should not be an issue.

Opetaia doesn’t want to **** around, that’s why.

The only fight anybody wants to see at CW right now is Opetaia and CBS. They are the two biggest names in the division. Opetaia beats the brakes off everyone at CW anyway and he’s taken two recent stay busy fights whilst waiting for Briedis.

I’d suggest he wants the biggest fight he can get. You are making out like he’s ducking the other names in the division. He simply wants the biggest fight. At his stage, with his stature why the hell wouldn’t he be pushing for the biggest payday he can get? He rules the division. He is right to demand the biggest fight.

This is pure rubbish. You don't get to demand the fight you want. You have to make it happen.

When you’re the best and baddest guy in the division, of course you do. Canelo, Crawford, Inoue, Beterbiev and so on all determine what fights they’ll take and what fights they won’t. Well Opetaia IS the guy at CW. He’ll ultimately have the biggest say in what matchups he’ll take and which ones he won’t.

CBS is running scared. You’re making this about the wrong guy. If CBS doesn’t grow some stones and man up he may very well find Opetaia won’t come back for him.

When the champion is calling you out and you don't answer it's a huge duck.

    Shame on CBS.

This is one fairly wild take. For starters Mikaeljan is next to completely unknown by all and sundry with the exception of boxing diehards. His pulling power is minimal. More to the point, he's currently dealing with his mandatory challenger, Ryan Rozicki from Canada. They were scheduled to meet in June but the champion suffered a cut in sparring.

Nothing about Opetaia is one note off. He wants to fight the biggest and the best in his division and has been agitating towards CBS and his WBO belt for some time. Furthermore he's willing to let CBS earn more money than him, just to get the fight made. It's the biggest fight that can be made in the division. Boxing would be a in far healthier state if more were like Opetaia.

Why do boxing fans love to marinate fights? It never works out for us.
