I really doubt it stopped or even decreased in the late 90s.

I don’t know, but I was making a point regarding american vs eastern european and thought it was interesting that that part of the world was always very advanced in this. Hardly news after the Sochi scandal though.

No. The 90s it is when the drug testing caught up with the whole science behind drug usage (to some extent). And thats Why some guys got caught.
Drug testing was being done in the 70s bouts but it was bull****. Monzon put champagne in one of his cups and the WBC acted like…whatever…

Ps- PEDs is not only steroids!

Late 90s. Tommy Morrison admitted he and most of his competition were roiding like crazy with no tests throughout most of the 90s.

Also drug testing has till today never fully caught up with all forms of PED, it's always a race and the drugs are always ahead of the tests. It's still hard if not near impossible to fully detect HGH use.

Bottom line, the drug usage to enhance performance is always ahead of drug testing!

It’s not late 90s. It was being done before. Maybe for some reason nobody did in Morrison fights or something.
My question is if they were doing it in the 60s or earlier. I know for a fact that fighters had to give a urine sample in the 70s !

Was it steroids they were testing for in the 70s or amphetamine/recreational drug testing?

I know baseball was testing for amphetamines since the 70s but they notoriously didn't implement PED testing until the 2000s. In the 80s they were testing athletes for cocaine.

Steroids weren't even officially illegal in the US until the late 80s.

I don’t think MLB tested for amphetamines until the 00s along with steroids.

They became illegal in the 70s, but nobody gave a ****. MLB teams would have jars of speed for the players and it was called “playing naked” if you didn’t take your amphetamines.

When they started testing for it, they allowed exemptions for adderall and Ritalin for people with ADHD. So a lot of players would try to get to diagnosed with ADHD so they could take it.

You're right. The MLB banned their use in the 70s but testing was lax until the 2000s. In my belief the reason leagues started testing for things like amphetamines and coke in the first place, was less to do with competition fairness but fear one of the athletes would just up and die on the field or the ring and that would create terrible PR for the business.

The NBA had its issue when top draft pick Len Bias OD'd on coke a day after he was drafted.
