I like the power guys, and C00ney can definitely stop Bonecrusher in his tracks. Gerry had the goods and gets overlooked these days in my opinion. Maybe rightfully so because he never beat a top contender in their prime. Bonecrusher would be a good gauge with his durability and his own power. I have a feeling it would turn out similar to Bruno's collapse to Bonecrusher in the later rounds, C00ney playing the part of Bruno of course.

You realize that, in so far as fights not stopped on cuts, you are using fights in which James was 36 years old to 46 years old, right?

I have no problem with anybody picking Cooney. But, Bonecrusher was durable, and, did hit hard. (I believe he had excellent power, but, mediocre accuracy since he started boxing late in life). Bonecrusher would certainly be a live dog in this fight.

You can pick either way. I'd have Cooney a mild fave.

Cooneys management sapped him of his confidence and his trainer Valle didnt help that any.
Put a Futch or Clancy who always raved about Cooney and you would have had a completly different fighter.
Since we didnt have that I still think Bone respects his hook to much and goes into survival mode.
    I got Cooney here.

James was 31 years old in the first Holmes fight.

It really is a tough call. Smith was a tad more durable and had some serious fire power. Cooney also hit like a truck and had the slight edge in height and reach. I also think he was just a bit more mobile than James and maybe even a marginally better boxer. Crazy thing is that despite both of these guys being hard hitters I can see this one going the distance in perhaps a 10 round fight. Marvis Frazier, Jessie Ferguson, Tony Tubbs, David Bey and Adilson Rodriguez all survived the distance with Bone and three of those five even got wins against him. And none of those five were particularly durable or stellar in their abilities. All of those fights took place between 1985-1987 during the period when Smith appeared to be prime or the closest to whatever prime he ever had. Worst case for Cooney is if Smith gets him up against the ropes and lands 3 or 4 huge shots to the head as he did in the Bruno fight it could potentially end things abruptly. But if this goes the distance or if Smith gets badly cut, I'm inclined to thinking cooney takes it.

Fine post Goo. It would be interesting to see Cooney against someone of a similar size. Crusher was a big guy. We didn't see prime Cooney against a guy this size let alone dangerous.

Funny thing, I was just thinking about Smith. Bonecrusher's got this one, Cooney doesn't have the punch resistance to make it too long, and Smith has exactly the opposite. It'd be a strong slugfest for maybe two to three rounds, but the Gentleman would end up stopped.

If Smith can withstand/recover from the kinds of bombs that Cooney unloaded on Foreman in the 1st round of their fight, I think he wins by stoppage somewhere around rounds 5-7.
