How exactly does Tyson beat Ali...?

Nothing I disagree with here. But when comparing to Frazier it should also be said that Tyson didn't have Frazier's workrate, stamina and resilience.

 

Tyson wouldn't need to dig deep to beat Doug Jones and Henry Cooper.

Most will think of Tyson in the end, when he was beatable by almost anyone. There was a time nobody could cope with him. He had an extremely difficult style to deal with.

Both at 21, Tyson wins. Ali would have nothing to hold him off with and Tyson's pressure was always successful. I think he would be too strong for Ali. If Cooper puts him down that badly, Mike does better. It might go the distance but MT wins a decision.

I know someone will bring up Quick Tillis, but I don't care. Ali had fights where he didn't look great either.

2 judges scored it 6-4, which is not an "easy" win. Without the knockdown it would've been a majority draw.

 

I agree they had to give Ali smelling salts in his corner after Henry cooper knocked him down. I honestly think a 21 year old Tyson gets him outta there TKO. Theres no way Cooper was as quick and destructive as a Prime Tyson would have been

 

Haven't seen the fight in a while, so I'll go back and watch it. But Tyson was still a developing fighter and Tillis was an older, experienced veteran in the ring.

 

Just to play devils advocate, are we doing the thing where we give post-exile Ali’s chin to pre-exile Ali? Where the Ali of the Williams fight has the durability of the Ali of the Foreman fight?

Because pre-exile Ali, in reality, could probably be KO’d by Tyson if he was caught early in a round, in the first half of the fight. I don’t think it’s all that likely to happen, but to say there’s no way is just not correct.

Yes, Cooper was a long way from Mike Tyson. Too many boxing fans revere Ali as a "God" type figure who was the most invincible fighter that ever lived, and this just isn't true. Cooper was hampered too much by cuts, but was more than holding his own until he couldn't see any longer.

 

I mentioned this earlier in the thread. People merge two different versions of Ali together too readily. He had to work at being so durable in the ’70’s.
