Protecting him into middle-age? He was already 32 years old when he turned pro lol, he started boxing late. Beat Dubois 3 years after turning pro, beat Parker 5 years after turning pro. Then fought Zhang 2x afterwards. He hasn't been protected at all.
Zhang is dangerous now? I thought he was old and Joyce was going to beat him? So Zhang beating Joyce, one of the slowest heavyweights ever and a faded Wilder that most people think was never good to began with means Zhang is dangerous? Joyce is horrible and has only 1 name on his resume and that is Parker and most people said Parker wasn't anything special until he beat a 38 year old Wilder and a 87 year old Zhang.
Why? What has Dubois done since Joyce beat him? Almost get knocked out by Kevin Lerena. quit against light punching cruiser weight Usyk. Could you imagine a prime Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Lennox Lewis, qutting aganst Usyk? Then Daniel Dubois beat 300 pound Jarrell Miller. So even if you want to add Dubois then Joe Joyce beat Parker a guy nobody thought was anything until he beat 2 senior citizens in Wilder and Zhang. Joyce is a mid tier heavyweight in a era where everybody else is pretty bad. The hilarious thing is Eric "Butterbean" Esch would have a good chance of beating Joyce. I never seen a guy move so slow in the ring.
Some convincing arguments made on his behalf of his career here. What if he didn't turn pro at 32 however, and turned pro at 23? How good could he have been by the time he reached his early 30s with a decade's worth of a career behind him?
He never had a real chance of being anything other than an opponent. A scary one, but still. He lack of defense was a huge negative for him in the HW division. He was always one punch from being kod. He has recently taken very bad punishment and for his sake I hope he hangs up his gloves.
Majority at ringside had Chisora winning as did most people on this forum so I'm not really sure what you're on about. Chisora landed all the eye catching clean effective punches in the fight and deserved to win clearly with the knockdown.
Parker is obviously a good win given that he was a former world champ, and Dubios recent win against Hrgovic was also pretty good. Not saying Joyce is an amazing heavyweight, but he's decent enough all things considered. This whole "current era bad. 70s good" angle you're putting into your posts also isn't helpful or relevant. Most of the 70s heavyweights would be cruiserweights today.
Can you name me one heavyweight southpaw in history that is a bigger puncher than Zhang? Other than Corrie Sanders, i can't think of any. Much as people may dislike Zhang, southpaws have an inherent advantage. Larry Holmes was ko'd twice as an amateur by a southpaw named Nick Wells. This wasn't due to lack of experience but simply because he couldn't cope with the weird southpaw angles. Zhang is the kind of guy who could score upsets in any era. If Zhang were fighting in the 70's, he would lose to Ali, Foreman and probably Frazier. But could a big hitting southpaw like Zhang defeat a guy like Ken Norton who wasn't known for a great chin? Yes. Could he beat a guy like Joe Bugner who was stopped a few times? Sure. Could Zhang potentially ko Earnie Shavers? Quite possibly. Whoever lands first likely wins. I am no Zhang fan but his southpaw stance combined with big power in both hands means he would be a legit top 10 contender in any era. Most ATG heavies never faced a good southpaw, let alone a good one with heavy hands.
Charles Martin and Bermaine Stiverne were former champions in this era. No heavyweight champion in the 1970s was under 200 pounds. So none were cruiserweights. Lol but you know who is a cruiser weight? Usyk the current heavyweight champion of the world. Also if you think the heavyweights now are in better shape than the heavyweights in the 70s then I won't bother trying to explain anything to you. 99 percent of the current heavyweights are out of shape. If Joyce would of boxed in the 70s he would weight 230 or 240. Hell Joyce was in this 220's when he was in his mid 20s
i do agree that a number of heavies today are carrying extra weight including Joyce. But it doesn't mean they aren't good.
