Anything Marciano can be volatile ... Mercer could stink out a joint on some nights but assuming were talking best for best I think Ray was way too strong, took an astonishing punch and offered a physical and stylistic match up unlike anything Marciano approached .... this is not a P4P rating but a H2H fight .. Mercer wins and could stop him ...

Mercer would edge him early on, then when Marciano is finished, he blows his back out after some hard ring action.

Have some respect (manners?) he’s an icon I won’t comment on the bout but really how would you actually talk to a great like that? You’d be in awe if you were a real fan.

He took everything Morrison,Cooper ,and Lewis could throw at him,why do you think Marciano would make him quit?

Morrison never applied the kind of pressure Marciano could & did.

Would the Mercer of the Lewis fight show up? I give him a ton of credit for that performance.

I suggest you rewatch their fight.

Mercer absorbed a left hook to the jaw early in the first round, his head whipping backward like that of a crash test dummy. The champion shook his head vigorously, as if to indicate that the punch had not hurt him, but it had. He knew it, and Morrison knew it. Morrison fought furiously in the second round, crashing hooks to the belly and uppercuts to the head. The champion jabbed and retreated, a strategy foreign to his brawling nature. He seemed confused, a warrior who was being forced to become cautious. The champion had taken poundings before, but never against such a heavy puncher. Could his chin and heart make make up for his lack of skill, as they had against Bert Cooper and Francesco Damiani? If not, he was in for a brutal beating. Mercer rallied in the fourth round, landing an overhand right to the jaw that backed up his opponent for the first time in the fight. The champion, still retreating, scored effectively to the body and head. Morrison seemed weary late in the round, his mouth wide open as he gasped during a clinch. Mercer, charging out to open the fifth round, caught his opponent with an overhand right to the face. The challenger fell against the ropes, taking a brutal beating before the referee finally stepped between the two fighters. Morrison, his arm finally untangled from the ropes, dropped to his hands and knees, remaining on the canvas for a few minutes before getting up and leaving the ring under his own power.

I commented on the fight in a thread a month or two back, to the incredible punches Morrison was landing. Mercer had a granite chin, doubtless.

But the fact is guys like Jesse Ferguson & Marion Wilson put him in a shell with their body attacks. Marciano crucifies him on those grounds.

Poll needed. Marciano beats Mercer, BTW, in my view.

List Marciano's wins against atleast 200+ pound elite Heavyweights that's the issue.

Marciano is a Cruiserweight and would be fighting against a Heavyweight like Mercer who outweighs him by 40 or 50 pounds.

Marciano would be coming straight at Mercer who's literally a brick wall with his stocky build and iron chin. Theres no way you can favour 185 pound Marciano vs 230+ pound Mercer in a slugfest.

Marciano is obviously greater than Mercer but the size difference is ridiculous and Marciano is a come forward swarmer and that style is not a good one vs much bigger stronger fighters.

Are you implying Mercer is an elite Heavyweight!?

Why would he not be considered elite ? He was ranked in the top 10 for 6 years and was a belt holder. I'm pretty sure he would be in most people's list for being one of the top 10 most notable Heavyweights of the 90s.

Again I'm not seeing the logic behind a 185 pound swarming Cruiserweight who was knocked down by Light Heavyweights. Being able to out brawl a world class 230+ pound Heavyweight with an iron chin.

Morrison was throwing powerful, accurate bombs at 221 ripped pounds, with plenty of fast twitch on the fundamentally sound Mercer. What could that stumbling, slow footed Marciano accomplished besides getting KO'd even more spectacularly?

Who hasn’t held a belt since the 1980-90’s?
