Wilder gave the best heavyweight of the world a run for his money three times and had far more success against him than Ruddock did against Tyson. ESB Wilder of course will get knocked out by the breeze of Ruddock’s smash.
Truth. Even the no-boxing-genius Wilder sees how often Ruddock bends to shoot the hookercut and times it for a crunching right hand that floors the Jamaican, real hard. He gets up, obviously more shaken than he's ever been, and gets roundhoused until the fight is stopped, 3rd round at the latest.
Amazes my mind how Wilder has went from laughably overrated to laughably underrated. I’ve never seen quite a transition as big as his.
To be fair Fury was far from his best in fights 1 and 3 with the inactivity in fight 1 then being way out of shape in fight 3. I would say Tyson's form was considerably better than Fury in fights 1 and 3 atleast. But Wilder and Ruddock can both take a good shot and both have KO power it's a toss up honestly.
Yeah, but you laid out the most salient points. Wilder showed both incredible power (arguably on a Shavers level) and amazing heart (arguably on a Holmes level) against Fury. There's no taking that away from him, that man gave everything and wouldn't quit. The man held the WBC belt 5 years, defending it 10 times. That alone is in my eyes worthy of respect. Even men considered far worthier than Deontay (Witherspoon, Foreman for instance) never held the title for as long, or defended it as many times successfully. At best Deontay cracks the top 25 ATG list, and he performed more than powerfully to belong there imo.
I do think it's a bit of a toss up. I could see either man winning- Although I do think that Ruddock had a much better chin. He exclusively got stopped rather than straight up knocked out, whereas Wilder did get straight up knocked out by Fury.
Ruddock went two wars with Tyson without getting knocked out, and there’s a good argument his stoppage was early (look how much leeway Fury got in comparison). I do think I favor Wilder, but Ruddock was one tough SOB before Lewis ruined him.
Even against Morrison he didn't get knocked out. The ref stopped it while he was up against the ropes like the first Tyson fight.
I’ll take Ruddock in this one. More durable and equally powerful. In fact, and I know many will consider this sacrilege, in my personal opinion Wilder’s power is overrated based upon the competition he fought. Not saying he can’t hit hard, that’s obvious, but a lot of newer generation fans act like he is a God amongst men when it comes to knockout power and I just don’t see it that way.
I am picking Wilder by tko 2 but very reluctantly. It all depends on who lands first. Technically Wilder's straight right should land before Ruddock's big looping telegraphed uppercut. However, that isn't always how it works. Wilder does not have the accuracy and vision of guys like Tyson and Lewis who could sense when Ruddock was loading up and time him with perfect straight rights. If Wilder fires first and misses, he won't be in a position to defend himself when Ruddock unloads in return. So it matters who leads first. If Wilder goes for the kill early when Ruddock hasn't even loaded up and misses and is off balance, Ruddock will nail him with an uppercut and Wilder won't recover. On the other hand, if both guys simultaneously try to land their best punches, Wilder lands first and stops him. I am reluctantly picking the man with the big straight right. But very reluctantly. Wilder is tough as nails but we saw how he was unable to recover when hit by Fury. And Ruddock hits a lot harder than that. Wilder tko 2.
2 times. Both when Fury was out of shape. When Fury was 100% focused, Wilder got manhandled. Because he was defending it against nobodies. His first Top 10 defence was Luis Ortiz - it was after 6 title defences and after 3 years of holding the belt. He should have lost it in the first Fury fight to be fair, the third above average guy he faced. If Povetkin fight took place when it was supposed to, he would have lost it sooner. I know, wouldas, couldas, shouldas, but Wilder was ducking top opposition for 3 years, never unified, didn't fight Joshua. His 10 title defences don't look as good under the microscope. That's 100% true. I just watched the third Fury Wilder fight last night for I don't know which time. Amazing heart.
A shootout, but I would be putting my money on Ruddock. More dangerous at more varied ranges (see the hellacious uppercut that rocked Morrison) with a somewhat more varied punch selection, more proven in wild west types of fights, and his lead uppercut could be decievingly sneaky. Wilder is a live dog because Ruddock's defense was often an afterthought, but per usual there are just so many ways in which Wilder's entire boxing operation can crumble. Very limited, very protected fighter. The only A-class fighters he entered the ring with he got clowned, and Fury and Ortiz were carefully selected as old, coming out of retirement, chinny (or dropped by cruisers), and stylistically working on the outside, giving Wilder the time to try to land the right and rob them on the cards if they don't risk taking the rounds decisively.
