In today's boxing, Gomez could have been dq'd since his cornermen went into the ring before the ref stopped the fight! lol

Gomez was such a brilliant fighter but doesn´t seem to get the credit he deserves.

It always the same from the haters, defences against average opposition, only beat Bantam weights with Zarate being sick for their fight.

His loss to the great Salvador Sanchez seems to be held against him. Everyone seems to forget how he got up from a devastating 1st round knockdown to give Sanchez hell but the Mexican´s iron chin was unbreakable, many other champions would´ve crumpled that night.

Wilfredo Gomez was an all time great. Shame he hadn´t picked up the Bantamweight crown early in his career, could have been the 1st 4 weight champ.

Brilliant fighter, my favourite Puerto Rican fighter with pre-Rosario Hector Camacho,Trinidad and Rosario also making the list.

I think he generally gets the credit he deserves on this forum. I think pretty much everyone on here whose opinions I respect consider him by far and away the best super bantam/junior feather in history.

His competition at the weight in general may not have been amazing but it was actually pretty good, but he was just better than everyone so in those cases where a fighter is much better than the competition people tend to assume that the competition wasn’t strong (Joe Louis’ heavyweight title reign being a prime example of that kind of thinking) rather than the champion just being great.

Plus he won world titles at two further weights after his peak years so you can’t knock him too much, I don’t think.

Thats all true Fred, I wrote something about that at another site one time.

Gomez is the one boxer whose first loss holds him down in the all time rankings.

Also they read the names on those defenses and dont realize that Carlos Mendoza, Roberto Rubalkdino, Juan Antonio Lopez, Nicky Perez, Julio Valdez and a couple others would have been world champions if not for him. Leo Cruz was himself a world champion (although in the WBA when Gomez was co-world champion, so it was another Mike Weaver-Larry Holmes and Ray Mancini-Alexis Arguello type of thing) and a decent one at that with three defenses. Gomez-Cruz was Gomez-Pintor in 1978. If you havent seen that fight, I highly recommend it. It was a war of attrition and recognized as the best Super Bantamweight fight of all time by Ring and KO magazine among others, before Gomez-Pintor took place.

But he is an all-time great. Certainly am ong the 100 greatest fighters ever to exist

Wilfredo was so smooth he made Napoles look like one of those cheap non-butter spreads.

Honestly, he almost lollipops in some shots that look like they have nothing on them and they just explode onto the target and knock guys senseless.

I truly believe the way he bullied Zarate made a lot of Carlos fans (and Mexican boxing fans in general) angry so they hold everything they can against Wilfredo. He wrecked a legend, made it look like casual Friday ant the office, and that doesn’t sit well with some people.

Ossie Ocasio v John Odhiambo (Cruiserweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Ocasio
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 JO
    Round 4: 10-9 JO
    Round 5: 10-9 JO
    Round 6: 10-9 JO
    Round 7: 10-9 JO
    Round 8: 10-9 JO
    Round 9: 10-9 JO
    Round 10: 10-9 JO
    Round 11: 10-9 JO
    Round 12: 10-9 JO
    Round 13: 10-10 Even
    Round 14: 10-9 Ocasio
    Round 15: Ocasio stops Odhiambo

Total through 14 completed rounds: 138-130 Odhiambo (actual scores: 138-134 and two scores of 137-133 all for Ocasio)

If you ever want to see a fight where the deck is stacked against the challenger, go no further than this one. Look at the official scores compared to mine. When you have a Puerto Rican defending a WBA title in Puerto Rico with a knee-deep WBA friendly Panamanian and 2 Venezuelan judges presiding, well dude, you haven't got a chance unless you score a KO. That kind of protection is like wearing a double condom sealed with duct tape. You're solid, baby! Seriously, Ocasio did nothing throughout this fight except jump in with a punch and clinch round after round. Odhiambo was nothing earth-shaking but he was consistent and steady in his attack to the body and head. To tell you how even the telecast was leaning, they would show a brief 10 second clip of the round's highlights. Every round was an edited Ocasio highlight. If he threw one punch that round, that was the highlight they were showing. I won't gripe too much about the stoppage, although I will say I believe they would have given Ocasio a broader chance to survive. But Ocasio was fresher down the stretch which is how he took this. If anything, the stoppage prevented highway robbery. I would not be recommending this fight, by the way. The 15th was the only exciting round. But I'm glad I watched it as I don't know if anything had ever been brought up in regards to the scoring on this bout.

Thanks for that Scartissue. John Odhiambo was a quality prospect fighting out of Denmark, beat some quality British fighters and veterans before crushing former champ Marvin Camel in 2 rounds. Camel would win another World crown 2 fights after this loss.

Camel didn´t defend his crown against the Kenyan!

Always surprised by this loss to Ocasio so cheers for clearing that up for me.

Odhiambo won 6 wins after his only loss but over journeymen.

    Don´t know why he retired.

Very unlucky not to win a World crown but got to give Ocasio credit for rallying for a ko.

He had an odd career and certainly had some things in his favor as our @scartissue points out here, but I’ve always like Jaws Osasio for some odd reason. Just such a quirky style and kept turning up like a bad penny, haha.

Jermain Taylor v Jeff Lacy (12 round supermiddle eliminator)

    Round 1: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 2: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 3: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 4: 10-9 Taylor
Round 5: 10-9 Lacy (knockdown disallowed)
    Round 6: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 7: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 10: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 11: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 12: 10-9 Taylor

Total: 119-110 Taylor (actual scores: 119-109, 119-109 and 118-110 all for Taylor)

Despite the onsidedness of the scores, I did enjoy the fight. Taylor was good, catching Lacy throughout with jarring shots. Lacy tried throughout but was simply out fought. Man, when Joe Calzaghe whitewashed him, the Lacy bubble burst. I do wish to comment on the 5th round though. At first viewing I yelled at ref Laurence Cole for not scoring - when Taylor went down from a right hand - a knockdown. And despite the HBO team all calling for it to be a knockdown, I second-guessed myself when I saw it on slo-mo, The right hand Lacy landed was nothing clean, just sort of skidding across Taylor, which I missed the first time. Taylor certainly acted like it was a real knockdown as if he was a bit wobbly, but i just didn't feel it was a true knockdown and feel Taylor had to have tripped over something. But it's all neither here nor there. A brilliant win for Taylor.

    Tim Witherspoon vs Ray Mercer

    1 Witherspoon
    2 Witherspoon
    3 Witherspoon
    4 Mercer
    5 Witherspoon
    6 Mercer
    7 Mercer
    8 Mercer
    9 Witherspoon
    10 Mercer

    95-95 Draw

I decided to watch this again i've heard people consider this a bad decision but i don't think so. It was a very close fight that could've gone either way IMO. Witherspoon started off better winning the battle on the inside with his body punching and eye catching over hand rights. But then Mercer adjusted in the 2nd half of the fight and i thought he did well boxing and out jabbing Witherspoon who's output dropped in the later rounds. Witherspoon did land more eye catching power punches overall but Mercer's jab was also very effective a fight of two halves for me.

Overall a pretty entertaining fight and a very competitive fight with some stand out rounds when they slugged it out. This sure was a good card for Heavyweight action as this was on the undercard of Bowe vs Golota 2 which was a war.

There's a part in this fight where Witherspoon turns to the ref like he's going to say something, but its a ruse and Mercer relaxes like there is going to be a break in the action only for Tim to nail him with a right. A really nice veteran move
