This,,,in every matchup Tua is put into it's always the same,,,If he lands his hook! Well against top tier fighters he rarely ever did.

The David Tua of this forum and the David Tua of reality are two completely different fighters.

Depends on how we're defining "important", I suppose. Tua did stop several contenders/future belt holders of his day....John Ruiz, Fres Oquendo, Rahman, Maskaev, and a past-it Moorer to name a few off the top of my head. He did produce an absolute dud in his biggest fight against Lewis though, and lost to Byrd, who I was certain Tua would beat.

I didn't make a pick on the above poll, so I can't see what you chose, but I'm curious the method with which you chose Dempsey. Do you see him overpowering Tua and getting the stoppage, pulling off something Lennox Lewis (or any other Tua opponent) couldn't? Maybe Dempsey overwhelming him with volume, and shaking off the occasional Tua hook to get a decision? Where did Dempsey face this level of power before, and how do we know how he'd react to it?

FWIW, I have no idea what this fight might look like, which is why I didn't bother picking a winner. Tua is plenty dangerous, but is not at all a reliable guy to bet on. I don't think this is a bad fantasy match-up though. Tua could be outboxed rather easily sometimes, but Jack would be in punching range for Tua however long this fight might last. I wouldn't bet a dime on this either way.

@janitor appears to have misread your post.

    You say exactly the opposite.

I sympathize with the viewpoint that Tua gets a heck of a lot of milage for beating one, maybe two rated opponents.

I thought janitor was winding me up to be honest. Lol.
Tua s one of those guys on here that knocks out a lot of ATG s, simply because he could hit..

Correct, words typed on a keyboard do a grave injustice in articulating the majesty of the spectacle that was the Tuaminator.

I don’t think Dempsey has the power to topple Tua, I see him either getting stopped or losing a decision

At one point I wondered how he was ever beaten considering just how good he seems to be in the fan's minds. Gotta love misinformation becoming information!

Good post. I picked Dempsey by KO, & I have to laugh at the credit Tua gets around here, but I certainly can believe he might win this fight. Could he KO Dempsey? You bet he could. Does he deserve the benefit of the doubt? Not even remotely.

I do see the appeal of Tua in this fight, insofar as Dempsey is within punching range, can’t blow Tua away with a quick combo or two, & Tua just has to survive long enough - with his ample chin - to land his own hook & quickly follow-up on the smaller man. It’s possible, sure. But if Lewis can put this guy in his shell with one or two right hands & take all the fight out of him, I’m plenty satisfied Dempsey’s whirlwind assault forces Tua into a stoppage. Dempsey would attack the body & head, not just the chin. Tua is outclassed in every facet of Boxing, sans chin &, debatably, power.

Dempsey is a fighter who has been very overrated historically, for a very long time.

Is he overrated on this forum?

    Probably not on aggregate.

People always say this but don't take into account who Tua was fighting.

Lennox Lewis is an ATG who Dempsey would lose to.

Ike Ibeabuchi broke the compubox record and is 6'2 230 pounds with an iron chin.

Chris Byrd is one of the best defensive Heavyweights ever and is a Southpaw. Did Dempsey ever fight anyone remotely like Byrd let alone a Southpaw ?

Hell Dempsey wouldn't even fight the best black contender of his own era avoiding Harry Wills. And even said in his own words he was scared of Sam Langford who would "flatten him".

But yeah keep thinking all these 185 pound Cruiserweights beat modern Heavyweights I love people who are nostalgic.
