My opinion of the fight outcome; Liston: Pros: Sledgehammer jab Big fists (more accuracy) Massive power Much scarier Bigger Taller More reach Stamina Cons: Not super fast Moderate handspeed Tyson: Pros: Fast on his feet More explosive Hand speed Extreme aggression Slips better Solid chin and huge neck Massive power Accurate Cons: Stamina is questionable Gets frustrated after some rounds Struggles against opponents who aren't scared Can't fight well outside of mid range. Rounds 1-6: Tyson goes for the KO, may drop Liston once or twice. Round 7-12: Tyson gets frustrated and starts getting hammered Result: Late stoppage or decision to Liston.
Tyson has a better chance against Sonny than Frazier, Dempsey, Marciano and other swarmers do. His speed, chin, outside game, size with regard to weight are relevant factors here, though I do favour Liston.
Frazier I dunno, Dempsey yeah but Marciano is like 50/50. Like Tyson could get frustrated so could Liston if he don't KO someone inside early or mid rounds.
I think Marciano gets obliterated in the worst possible fashion out of the bunch. He doesn't have the speed factor the others do
Yes but Tyson ain't Patterson. He's bigger, faster, stronger, harder puncher, more agressive, better defense, can use jab and uppercut better...
They said the same when Holyfield faced Tyson but when someone is not afraid and could punch and also has granite chin it wouldn't be easy fight that's for sure. If Liston don't KO Marciano in first 4,5 rounds he would get beaten in later rounds.
I would say Dempsey might perform better than Frazier against Liston, primarily due to how insanely explosive and fast he is early on in a fight. Liston had competent defense but he was hittable and while that's never a good sign against Dempsey, I think Liston could probably take what Dempsey dishes out and counter him effectively. I don't think Jack can take Liston's shots
Jack is good finisher tho, if he smells blood he'll jump him like a maniac since he had great punching power not just handspeed. And Jack is known to beat bigger guys than him, he had more problems with smaller fast guys that could move but with big guys he could fight very good.
Liston was too good a boxer (overall better in that department than Foreman and Frazier for sure). He could acclimate to his opponent's style. He also could not he intimidated. Mike shakes the hell out of Liston early on, but the latter cools out and applies the jab. Mike gets a smashing right uppercut when he tries to come in, staggering across the ring but Liston remains patient. From this point Mike gets cautious, and that's what loses him the fight. After round after round of having his whole day ruined by the jab, Mike gets struck by a thunderous right and left hook, counted out in 9.
I think it would go that way but the stoppage would be a bit later like 12th round stoppage is the right choice.
I like this. I've said repeatedly, peak Liston wasn't just a mindless slugger, he was a polished BOXER with excellent technique and skills. But I'll repeat myself again ... peak Mike Tyson on a given night could (emphasis on could, not would) beat any heavyweight who ever lived.
If Liston could be intimidated by Ali, imagine how he would act with Tyson in front of him. Liston quits round 3.
