If the name Cleotis Pendarvis sounds distantly familiar, that's because "Mookie" is a 20 year veteran, whose career peak was probably a stoppage loss to Dierry Jean in an IBF light welterweight eliminator in 2013 but who is likely more famous as Margarito's sparring partner ahead of the Pacquiao fight (being a fast southpaw of similar dimensions). Since the defeat to Jean he is just 5-18 over the last decade, and currently on a 1-17 run ...another loss will put him at the .500 mark, currently sitting at 22-21-2 with 9 KOs.

Carbonell isn't among the brightest shining diamonds from the Cuban amateur scene (he lost decisively to peers like Arlen López and Roniel Iglesias, falling well short of their accolades) but he is an undefeated natural light heavyweight and towers over his opponent at 6'2", with a seven inch height advantage. With all respect due the quick, slick and experienced 38 year old underdog, if Carbonell doesn't ice Mookie toot suite there's nothing to see here, folks. This is a prospect test he must pass with flying colors.

 

And yes, this is the same Curtis Harper that once refused to fight Efe Ajagba (for which most people raked him over the coals on the night, but the more you scratch the surface the more it seems that he was engaged in a perhaps very well justified act of protest against shady promoters).

 

Ra-Leek Born vs. Jayvonne O'Neal, 4 rounds @ lightweight

 

This was scheduled for super featherweight but Born missed weight by several pounds for this, his professional debut.

O'Neal is 0-8, with all but one defeat being a KO1. That other time he managed to hold out to get knocked out in the second round.

 

Round 1

O'Neal pops a right jab stepping to meet Born in the middle of the ring but doesn't like the flavor on a partially blocked 1-2 from Born and circles away into the ropes. Born meets him there, unloading a four straight punch combo which gets O'Neal ducking in place. Born places a HARD left hook under O'Neal's elbows. O'Neal rolling around in agony.

KO1!

 

The ring emcee announced the stoppage as coming 25 seconds into the opening round but really less than half that (specifically 12) had elapsed on the round clock between the bell and the shot that put O'Neal down.
