Snippets from some of Marciano's early fights can be seen in local newsreels. The footage is most likely still out there.

Boxrec is a great and convenient resource, but isn't always accurate. Keene Simmons for about 2-3 years was regarded as one of the best amateur heavyweights in the country and a golden gloves champ, so he definitely had more than 1 amateur fight.

Here is a short piece mentioning two outstanding amateur heavyweights with one of them being Keene Simmons and the other being Wallace Cross.

The inaugural fall amateur boxing show at the Golden Gate, scheduled for September 9, has been postponed tentatively to Monday night, September 23.

Inability of seating engineers and contractors to complete work on the improved facilities before mid-September is given as the reason for the two-week postponement.

The September 23 show will consist of the same previously announced eight five-round bouts, headlined by two of America's outstanding amateur heavyweights, Keen (Dynamite) Simmons of Harlem, Golden Gloves and Metropolitan title-holder, and Wallace (Hurricane) Cross of Orange, N.J., national AAU champion.

Every 60 seconds in a Marciano thread, an Italian succumbs to hyperthermia.

I understand your initial reasoning here… but Marciano was famous for having a relentless work rate. Maybe you watched Tommy Morrison fight and that’s where you got the comparison. Tommy was juiced up and didn’t have the endurance to land those bombs all fight. Mercer knew Tommy would gas

Marciano not gassing and he’s coming with that big power all fight. Mercer didn’t have great defense, he was there to be hit… eventually rocky would break him down and either stop him late or cruise to a decision.

A large part of Marciano's work rate was who he was working against. Crippled old men trying to conserve their legs for a 15 rounder don't offer sustained resistance. And let's not forget Marciano was also "there to be hit"... And Mercer hit a bit harder than those Rock faced.

How often must this myth be debunked? Marciano’s average age of opponent was I believe 31 years old. In regards to his best opponents they were mostly older men which isn’t uncommon. Look at today’s HW scene. But u conveniently forget about prime Layne who was a better version of Lyle before he gave up on training. Lastarza x2, Don C, Matthews were smaller men and less quality but they were prime and ranked. Lastarza is often underrated here he lasted longer then Moore, Walcott, and Charles w Marciano, Heck Charles was only 32 and his age wasn’t a factor in his loss. His legs were perfectly fine even if he was on a slight downside.

Marciano is the only fighter I know of who fans present the lack of experience as a benefit. Charles was a peer in age, had a full career's worth of experience over Marciano, and so he was washed up. In this one unique instance. Usually if guys are a good fighting age and abouts the same the man with experience is said to have a benefit. Usually.

37 in 1952 isn't the same as it is in 2024, especially when considering the size of the fighters and the length of the fights. We have better care and protection of fighters on all levels, with better nutrition, more infrequent fights, better supplementation and medical care. NFL QB's now play to 40 and beyond whereas 30 marked either the very end or close to it in the 1950's. The numbers simply don't mean the same things in the respective eras.

Layne was a slob compared to today's heavies. He had a ton of heart but zero athleticism, slow and weak, and no physical assets, not big, not tall, not long. He had nowhere near Lyle's God-given talents. And he hated to train. Lastarza was a hype job who based his whole career on his first effort against Marciano in hopes of a return. Charles was 32 going on 102, with at least 96 pro fights (many against absolute assassins) under his belt and the tread completely gone. The "slight downside" was so slight he want .500 for the rest of his career.
