Sullivan beats the **** out of Loma, for as bad as the heavyweights from that period looked on film it’s clear that little has changed in class when it comes to the lower divisions. Gans-era fighters largely learned their craft from Sullivan-era fighters, and Sullivan was known to feast on little men (no Diddy)

I’ve watched fighters from eras slightly after him, like Tommy Burns etc, they can’t put sophisticated combinations together, he could use footwork and set you up for the right hand, that’s it, no jab, no technique in combinations at all, I know for a fact I’d beat him, and he’d learned from guys that did evolve the game, so he would’ve been a lot better technically than Sulivan, Lomachenko and plans easily see his punches coming and would be able to time his rhythm so easily, force his errors using simple technique, like dipping the knees, Sulivan would commit and he’d time him so easily.
Yes there’s a size difference, but I’ve watched 135lbs or something guys drop 200lbs+ guys in sparring, so when the skill gap is immense, it’s more than possible to make up for the size.

 

You're talking about a much bigger man who was know for being very athletic in his pomp and scoring early round KOs, which was highly unusual for the era. Interestingly, Sullivan was noted as a great straight puncher and given major props for it.

Unfortunately, most people only know about the famous image of Sullivan fighting gruelfests when he was already an alcoholic.

I think you place too much weight and emphasis on Burns when it comes to assessing the overall technical abilities of boxers from that period and beforehand. Sullivan and Burns were worlds apart with regard to how their own eras viewed them, and keep in mind there isn’t much evidence to indicate significant leap in fundamentals from their eras when you look at manuals, or even footage. For example, I'd say Langford, Gans, Britt are miles above Burns in terms of class and overall skill in every way but they were from the same era, and in large part were trained or took inspiration by fighters from the Sullivan era. I'd even say the likes of Mike Donovan look more skilled.

Feel like you're overlooking the jab and combos of Burns here, the main thing that doesn't impress me about Burns is how shitty his defense is, but I'd say his jab and setups aren't too bad.
