Gibbons to his credit did look very impressive against Jack Bloomfield, even if Bloomfield isn't elite the way he thoroughly demolished him was the fashion that an elite fighter would destroy a journeyman.

    Bloomfield was strictly domestic level.

    Tunney outboxes him comfortably.

True story. I hear that Tunney kept him as a pet.

Pretty sure it was on Hugman. But Tunney v Gibbons being a title eliminator is something I've read a bunch of places. If you google it a lot of references come up. The ticket read "heavyweight championship contenders". It was also a 15 rounder.

Heres a list of polo grounds fights that cite it as such. http://www.perno.com/lists/polo grounds.html

Gibbons was aging but he was the third or 4th best HW behind Dempsey, Tunney and Wills.

Greb was a far better LHW than Marshall. And Olson doesn't come close to Greb at 160.

Greb was p4p the best ever and the greatest MW but as LHW I would not rate him that high perhaps he is not in my top 15 LHWs while Marshall is one of the best LHWs.

Greb beat Norfolk, Tunney, Gibbons, Levinsly, Rosenblum, McTigue, Delaney, Loughran, most of them multiple times.

Yeah but none of them was good as Charles, Marshall or Moore.

Tunney, Gibbons and Loughran are all top 10 LHW, as is Greb. Marshall is not.

Greb is not top 15 LHWs of all time let alone top 10 while Marshall is top 20 for sure maybe even top 15, tho Greb is the goat MW.

Not many who know boxing history are going to agree with this. Greb's resume is far too deep. We can make a thread on it.

Tunney is overrated at hw. His best win was to an extremely inactive Dempsey. He almost got knocked out the second time. I think a prime Dempsey does beat him. Tunney was fancy for his time, but boxing advances a lot in the ten years after him partially thanks to him. Marciano saw better boxers in Charles, Moore, Lastarza and Walcott. People aren’t gonna like this but it’s obvious on film. Tunney wasn’t even as good a boxer as Lastarza. Now for his time he was revolutionary. But the 20s down compared to later sucked. Once fighters got access to film and the sport exploded after Dempsey people got much better. Lastarza on film looks way more refined than Tunney ever did his whole career. That being said it could be because of rules and gloves that they look more refined idk. But it’s obvious on film. Marciano KO before 6

I bet you think Tunney was a defensive boxer who circled away behind his jab, don’t you.

He kept his hands way to low crossed his feet like an amateur constantly even when he threw punches he was wide open to be hit because he never brought them back to a defensive position. He would get murdered against Marciano. He is Ken Shamrock of boxing. He should get his due because he changed the sport, but there was plenty he did wrong on film.
And no he prob fought closer to Matthews then Lastarza…that didn’t end well for Matthews
