Wilder's done. Finito, end game He's totally shot as a fighter both mentally and physically. He's taken enough punishment. One more payday may be one too many.
If Wilder does continue on - this is the fight to make for him. A stationary target to line up his right hand and hopefully parlay it, into one last big payday. However I’m hoping he just goes away.
Why does turkey man want this? An overrated hype job at the end of his career v a non boxer. Waste of time. The only person interested in this will be @Redbeard7 who will see it as a top level matchup
Ngannou would apply pressure, which Wilder's always been bad with. AJ did a good job with Francis, but AJ is a legit contender who had experience against multiple styles and Wilder isn't (and quite possibly never was) and was protected from pressure fighters because they'd have been kryptonite to him... Also AJ can follow a tactical plan and set traps, Wilder is far more basic than that. It's not impossible that Wilder could win by KO - but it's far, far from a foregone conclusion.
I think Wilder woukd win this quite easily even at this stage of his career. Manna from heaven for a fighter with his attributes. Early KO.
It's worth considering Ngannou may become gun shy after walking into a KO like last time. Wilder might be rubbish skill wise but it's still levels above a novice, and he has the power to keep Ngannou honest unlike Fury did that night. You're right it's not a foregone conclusion, but it's likely.
I honestly think Wilder's power has gone a little bit. Maybe it's just tougher competition. Seems his speed has gone too. I know they say power I'd the last thing to go but I think Wilder's power might have come from his speed somehow.
To be fair I do think Zhang looked buzzed just before he pole axed Wilder and maybe Zhang is just tougher chinned than any of Wilder's previous competition but Wilder is over 40 now I think, he took some proper beatings from Fury and in general he seems a little less passionate about the sport. It's not a wild leap to say he's over the hill but because he was such a ducker in his hey day we'll never know if he was ever really that good. He definitely was over-rated at one point.
TBF I did say that in my previous post ("It's more a question of whether Ngannou trusts his chin enough to march forward and deny Wilder space to swing"). Then again, it's still possible he's a Chisora style warrior who doesn't give a **** and looks the same as ever after getting sparked. It depends... Once on the backfoot, Wilder starts to look alarmingly like a novice, he has no clue how to respond. In fairness, Fury at that point was getting a reputation (largely undeserved IMHO) for having decent power - Ngannou wasn't scared for a moment. Sure, Wilder's got a bigger reputation for power, and it's more deserved (he has real power, even if it's not goat level power), but Wilder isn't Joshua or Fury and can't adapt... Nor does he have the chin that Joshua has or the recovery that Fury has - he has heart, but he's a very vulnerable fighter who was protected hard for very good reason. In many ways it depends more on Ngannou than Wilder, IMHO... Wilder's weakness has been laid bare and Ngannou is aggressive enough, has a decent enough chin and enough power to cause him real problems. Yes, Ngannou was overhyped after Fury, and perhaps written off a bit too much after Joshua... But Wilder's been massively overhyped his whole career
He wanted a body on his record and I for one would laugh if he ends up as one himself. Adonis Stevenson was a POS, and I felt bad for him after the Gvozdyk fight. But I would not feel bad for Wilder. He stated over and over again how he wanted to kill an opponent, any opponent. So I am fine with him fighting on for as long as he chooses for.
Well the thing is, the moment he started fighting more aggressively vs Zhang, he got laid out. Same with Parker, he countered him every single time. Wilder has only faced 4 good opponents in his career and got battered by all of them, if not for Ortiz's fine china, he would have two wins over wilder Genuinely might be the most overrated boxer of all time
