Sonny Liston never blinded Muhammed Ali. Well, not with chemicals.

This is my rough draft! But its become somewhat of a controversial topic lately, so might as well drop this. Let me know if you want me to finish (further elaborate, add citations, ect.)
I try very hard not to be bias but please let me know if you notice anything fishy, ill try to rectify it.
    ENJOY!

If your reading this, im sure your aware of the backstory behind this post but ill give a quick recap. November 1964, Liston is by far the worlds most dominant Heavyweight with no real challengers and has a upcoming bout with a young hopeful named Cassius Clay, with 13:5 against Clay. Somehow, someway Ali managed to win. But during the fight Clay had entered extreme distress with extreme eye burning and over the 60 years since the fight it is now commonly accepted that Liston put something on Alis glove to blind him, which is untrue.

Now, onto the meat and potatoes.

Id like to first establish that Liston never put any illegal chemicals on his gloves. First off, Dundee(Alis former trainer) claims “Dundee, 82, revealed: 'People said Liston put liniment on his gloves to blind Ali, but that was a crock.

'It was either Monsel's Solution (a coagulant to treat cuts that was legal at the time but is now banned) or else it was the stuff they kept rubbing on Sonny's shoulders between the rounds.” Now, first of all. Monsels solution isn’t one which typically transmits on contact. This is shown by the nature of the solution which is primarily to close/stop the bleeding of cuts, not only that but its often described as a very thick liquid. A cut solution would be very ineffective if it would worr off on contact, not sure why the corner of the heavyweight champion at the time would be using such an ointment. In addition, Gordon Laboratories which FDA, ISO 22716, and GMP approved has a paper discussing Monesels Solution (https://www.medline.com/media/catalog/Docs/MSDS/MSD_SDSD93283.pdf ) This paper has a compartment(4) under which it discusses the “FIRST AID MEASURES” of the solution. In this compartment they discuss the application of the solution to eyes. The portion consists of this expert “After eye contact: Check for and remove any contact lenses. Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Cold water may be used: Get medical attention if irritation occurs.” Obviously, Alis eyes were greatly irritated. But that doesn’t validate the claims of application of that chemical. Furthermore, if there truly was chemical the water the Dundee was applying wouldn’t be near enough to get it out and certainly not fast enough to get him back into the fight. Sadly, the video recording of the fight only features Listons corner in round 2, the round before Alis eyes start to burn. We see nothing being put on Listons shoulder so we cannot verify what it was or wasn’t.

Now that we established what it wasn’t, we must ponder what it was. This is gonna get nerdy, so strap in. The Anterior Chamber is a part of the eye which filled with fluid. It is between the Iris and the Cornea. A puncture or damage of this chamber is known to cause some pretty intense burning. This is a natural reaction to an injury of this nature. I believe that Liston had the physical capabilities necessary to inflict damage which would burst these cavities. Now this isn’t me claiming he’s the strongest heavyweight ever, I think the reason he was able to perform these feats when others who are widely regarded as heavier hitters (Foreman, Shavers, ect) couldn’t is due to the directionality of their punches. Liston was known as the first substantially sized heavyweight ever who began the age of giants (besides notable exceptions like Louis, Carnera, ect.) but he was actually quite small by modern standards standing at roughly 6’1. (Yes, I know shavers was only 6’ but Liston was much more of a head hunter and fought generally weaker opponents.) The direction of the punch matters a lot here as the top of the head is much sturdier than the bottom, where Liston was commonly hitting from. The top has the Forehead which is the ultimate defense of the eyes and brains while the bottom only has the Cheekbones and Maxilla, generally much weaker. This is the reason that Liston was able to do so much damage to this part of their eyes. When it comes to opponents shorter than himself, I’m just gonna chalk this up to his head hunting of substantially physically weaker opponents.

You may be asking, “why doesn’t this happen more often?” Well, how many heavyweight are REALLY as strong as Liston? Not many. And how many of those fought opponents who were so far below them? Not many. Head hunted like Liston did? Not many. Theres lots of reasons that only Liston has performed this feat.

Finally, let me explain that I don’t believe that Liston was destroying eyeballs or anything. It was slight damage, enough to naturally heal but definitely enough to cause some burning.

If Sonny knocked his eyeball back into his head why was he able to go back to his hotel and have ice cream with Sam Cooke, Jim Brown, and Malcom X and not go to a hospital? This is well documented.

    Hi Buddy.
I must say you present a tour de force of why you and Dundee think that Liston's corner couldn't have put any liquid/ substance on his gloves, firstly let me the following is my friendly and kind ( I hope ) of ever so slightly raising some doubt about whether there was anything on Liston's gloves , because Dundee and your good self have it that, it didn't happen, doesn't make it so, as esteemed as Angelo was, you say the Monsels solution was ( at the time ) used as a treatment for cuts, but then you go on to quote a piece about if the solution gets in a fighters eyes, you must immediately flush the eye for 15 minutes, well that confuses me, because if it was used for treating cuts, and most of the cuts that fighters get are normally around the eyes, how can that be squared ? also you make plenty of Liston being very strong , which he was, but Clay himself had a very hard jab later in his career, Holmes also had a formidable jab, plus lots of lighter fighters have had good hard jabs, so why is only in this fight that it happened, also not sure how hard and often Liston hit Clay with his jab during the fight, but I would imagine lots of his former foes, who would have been a lot slower than Clay, have shipped hundreds of Listons jabs. and not received the injury, also if the top of the head is sturdier than the bottom, as is the claim, that would make the facial structure stronger around the eye, which is at the top of the head no ? also you state that there are lots of reasons that only Liston performed this " feat " citing the opponents were far below him, well, just because a fighter is inferior to Liston in the skill set, or a lighter puncher, or not as strong , it doesn't pan out that it would happen to them, as it plainly didn't, otherwise dozens of his opponents over his career, would have suffered the same injury, as I have understood your theory.
In closing, just like to say take the above in the spirit it is meant, not to provoke an argument, not to belittle you or you post, you have been here for a while now, and apart from an early overindulgence in fighting Listons case against posters that were trolling , you have become a valued and prominent member of the forum, some would have been a lot more callous and vindictive if they chose to pick your post apart, not me.
That said, look forward to other posters comments and thoughts on your detailed and very interesting comments, maybe I have got it wrong.
stay safe SL, chat soon buddy.

Jack McKinney, the Philadelphia newspaper writer and radio talk show host, claimed that Joe Pollino (Liston's trainer) admitted privately that Liston ordered him to apply an astringent to his gloves. McKinney said this long after Pollino had died. I do not consider McKinney to be a reliable source.

Liston didn't have a "dirty" reputation. He did use some rough tactics, most notably holding and hitting when he had an opponent trapped on the ropes (see Liston-Patterson 1 and Liston-Bill McMurray). Mike DeJohn complained of a late hit after Sonny floored him, but Liston apologized and said it was accidental. Eddie Machen claimed after the Clay-Liston fight that he, too, had experienced burning eyes against Sonny, but he didn't show any signs of it during their fight. Overall, I would say that Liston fought cleanly.

The chance of such damage happening to an eye then miraculously being fine next round after Dundee just happened to work on the eye is a little hard to swallow, particularly given it hasn't happened to anyone's knowledge in the history of boxing. I'd have more chance of winning solo first prize in the lotto 2 weekend running, or three even. I'd much more readily believe an errant thumb but there's never been any talk or evidence of a thumb.

What would have been applied to Liston's shoulder...something like tiger balm? What if Liston then rubbed his shoulder like put pressure on the front deltoid with a closed fist, it seems like there should be footage if that happened but also putting something directly on the gloves should not have gone unnoticed, maybe just bad camera angles

You really people think that Ali lied and so did Machen and Folley?

It wasn't just Ali that claimed Liston cheated it was claimed by few other fighters including Machen and Folley and maybe even Valdes.

So enough of 100 000 excuses for your hero Sonny who quit and cheated against Ali.

Ali also never changed his claims and never said it was not on purpose because it was on purpose, I don't care what Dundee said.
