Surely the 'blame the trainer' routine is getting old by now, even for him. Inside a couple of years he had 5 different trainers : Rob McCracken Robert Garcia Derrick James Angel Frenandez Ben Davison
Christopher Livingstone Eubank could do well in combo with Wlad Klitschko. Wlad can teach him the dark arts of hit and hold. The sheriff can teach him the warriors code. Probably only need 6 months in Ukraine. Probably put him on front line for publicity. AJ could be a war hero and 3x champ.
Ben Davison hired the youtuber Lee Wylie to help train his fighters apparently very inspired by his youtube videos. You can hear Lee Wylie in the corner instructing Joshua to "roll the dice" and throw the uppercut moments before getting knocked out by a right hand after doing exactly that.
To a degree… blame the trainer could be right… look what happened to Golden Boy and how he devolved as his career went on - even in good hands sometimes smart people ruin the fighter trying to change things.
He needs to learn the jab and grab. Manny Steward has passed, so there is only 3 people that can teach it to him. Norman "Stoney" Stone John "The Quietman" Ruiz "Dr. Steelhammer" Wladimir Klitschko
Every time he lose there is a thread about a new trainer. It isn’t the trainer. What you saw is what Joshua is. It wasn’t because of the trainer that he lost.
For someone so in love with his bruvvas, it was quite strange he went with Ben. I think one reason he went with Ben is that he could pay him far less than an 'esteemed' trainer who demands more (similar to Fury probably). I'm sure Ben's contract was terrible compared to others. And another is that Ben isn't an older figure who will try to properly control him. In truth, AJ probably wants Sugar Hill. Land the RH and be the big dog. AJ can understand that. Ben is trying to watch tape and analyse opponents and take care of details. AJ is confused. AJ needs a simple trainer for his simple mind and that's where Sugar Hill is perfect for him. In reality he's 35 and isn't going to get better. By that stage he should know everything he needs to know in his sport. He just isn't as good as he thought he was.
Seriously he should go to Lennox Lewis for advice on how to fight smaller guys, how to grab aggressive fighters and hold them like Dubois and beat them up on the inside in addition to how to use a jab properly but it's too late either way to be sharpening up your fundamentals at this point in the game. I can't believe how bad AJ was defensively here. At least Derek James would have made sure he had a tight guard.
Hmm I know that after the next one it will be time to hit the deploy Malik Scott button. He's the type of idiot savant that Talksport love him so it'll be a perfect match up as AJ will likely be in the "I've got the hunger back" phase of his career by then.
The reason he gave for leaving Derek James was he doesn't like being away from family, friends for long, Derek was busy with other fighters. AJ has made so much money he can easily afford to pay his trainer above market value. As far as home sickness is concerned, tough luck, being a top heavyweight requires sacrifices and when you are being paid $30-40 million a fight, training away from home shouldn't be an issue. AJ lost the drive to be the best possible version ages ago
