Actually it was much worse than being a "womanizer."

Per court transcripts I obtained, and primary source articles by court reporters at his various trials, Max forced and financed an abortion for his fiancé, he “knocked her over a chair with his fist, cutting her face and scalp so severely it was necessary to call a doctor.” His first wife testified that he used her “somewhat like a sparring partner,” often beat her severely, became violently angered without provocation, and frequently stayed away from home nights with other women.

He was charged with **** of a virgin in NYC, and over four years of appeals and counter-appeals, his accuser was hounded, harassed, intimidated, and offered jobs out of state by numerous individuals acting on behalf of Baer. Then just as he had done as the court date neared with his former fiancé, he repeatedly pled the fight at the pre-trial deposition, and right before a public trial, Max settled out of court.

A veteran sports editor in the town Max came to prominence, wrote that Max boasted of numerous conquests, “which took considerable fixing,” of cash payments to shut up any “misled” or abused women.

Couldn't keep his dick in his pants? Nothing new about that. Repeatedly abused women and there are court transcripts to prove it? That definitely new.

His character openly makes light of it in the movie, & still people are here defending the depiction.

Well I wouldn’t file any of that under simple, “Womanising,” almost needless to say.

Call me old school but it wasn’t and isn’t a positive trait. Especially when you have a family. He’s one of my favorite fighters but he was no angel.

To each his own. I would never label getting your dick wet a sign of poor character, personally - providing for obvious ethical standards such as consent.

If ur single get it wet all u want. I was more referring to his abuse of women along with the infidelity when I said womanizing. This isn’t an unusual trait amongst Hw champs.

Any links/sources for these documents and statements? Never heard of this story before, then again doesn’t sound outlandish for the times either sadly

I think we have to ask what we would have done, if we had starlets throwing themselves at us when we were young and dumb.

I don't think that I would have handled it well.

See my previous thread comments, but central to my book, backed up with hundreds of cited sources, including direct quotes from Baer to reporters, is the fact that he DID repeatedly use Frankie Campbell's death and his hand in it, as a public relations tactic, and to intimidate his opponents. That includes Carnera and Braddock specifically in newspapers before both fights.

His claims of psychological harm are a farce. Where was this supposed trauma that made him unable to fight like he did before Campbell, during his brutality against Levinsky II? During Carnera and Schmeling? It was noted in his first fight in NYC vs Schaaf, that he neglected any serious training and actually gained weight in camp because he shunned roadwork. He lacked the stamina necessary for ten rounds of hard fighting, and was outclassed by more experienced fighters in Schaaf and Loughran. Despite claims that he held back in his first fights after he killed Frankie, after the Schaaf bout, one ringside reporter noted he was “a fiery youngster with a destructive spirit” and “the man in front of him is not merely an opponent, but an enemy to be destroyed.” Another that he “started aggressively, swung hard and tired fast."

Per examination of the timeline, right about the time Frankie Campbell slipped into a coma, two hours after the fight, Max “swaggered into the lobby, smiling and happy as if nothing had happened” at the Whitcomb Hotel, and regaled a local veteran sports editor and Young Corbett III's manager with the story of his victory. After he made an appearance at the hospital the next morning, he snapped at a reporter “I can’t let this interfere with my career.” He repeated variations of this last comment in the hours and days after Campbell's death. While Baer claimed trauma, three days after the fight his handlers were in negotiation with MSG, a local venue owner reached out to Max and his team to suggest a benefit for the widow/son, and the calls went unreturned. Four days after Campbells death, Max had driven to Reno, where he trained for his next fight, was sparring partners for local fighters, danced and gambled, and fell in love with his first wife. So so traumatized.

Jim Jeffries, who sat ringside wrote:
“No man ever had his brains beaten out in a boxing match in my day. No referee would have ever permitted such a thing to happen, nor were the fighters bloodthirsty enough to beat a helpless man as Baer did Campbell. Mashed his brains, the doctors say—and the boy out on his feet! The referee should have stopped it. He says he couldn't see Campbell. The crowd saw, didn't they? Why didn't he see it? That's what he's paid to do!”

In reference to DubbleChin's comment, I actually found no less than eight different comments by major sports editors/reporters after the Carnera bout, that Baer spit in Carnera's face, on his chest and at his feet during the bout. I had someone say, well obviously reporters lie. But I seriously doubt they all got together in a room and made this stuff up.

Here's one I did after I was asked by Nigel Collins and Bill Dettloff to write an article, "Cinderella Man Got it Right About Max Baer." The first hour I discuss the article content and my book content before they segue into the contemporary HW scene. I've done two more now that my book has published and those are coming up in October-November.

That is presupposing the relationship is a heartfelt one. Was it? I don’t know.
