Why is it that “the bear” stuck to Liston but “the mummy” didn't stick to Foreman?

The Ugly Bear was never popular as evidenced when he got off the Plane after winning the title and nobody was there.

The Mummy won the Gold Medal waving the American flag instead of embracing Marxism like his fellow Athletes did in Mexico, rolled Frazier and Norton like Cupcakes and became a Houshold name.

Foreman was always the better Fighter, more popular and a American success story not a career Criminal Substance abuser.

 

His real alias was The Night Train.

 

Because there's no way the 'The mummy' could compare to 'Big George'.

It's like calling Tommy the Motor City Cobra instead of the Hitman, and even then the Motor City Cobra is a damn good nickname.

 

Foreman was also known as “The Machine” sometimes a name doesn’t stick, especially not ones created as an insult.

 

Houston Tornado was another early one.

 

Honestly that’s awesome, I wish it stuck.

I prefer the alliteration of Texan Tornado but yeah, his team tried making that one stick. A few of his early fights he gets introduced that way.

 

Texan Tornado is cash for an alias. Great name.

 

The Rabbit and Washer Woman woman didn’t stick. Just like those names, the Mummy was a straight up insult.

Fortunately for Holmes, Peanut Head didn’t gain any traction either.

Acorn did stick for Shavers though - it sounded innocent enough I guess.

Ken Norton took it to another level calling Holmes “Neanderthal Man” - that was some nasty ****. Lol.

For Liston, the “Bear” part on its own could be taken as a compliment- and Liston was also just called (and perhaps most commonly) The Big Bear (minus the Ugly) -
