Where do you rank Pernell Whitaker?

The fight they aired on HBO Oscar couldn't lay a glove on Whitaker. Pea embarrassed and exposed DelaHoya that night.
Oscar was already a huge star and old Pernell as great a champion as he was didn't generate $. There was no way HBO was gonna let Whitaker hold up their business.

I didn't think the Ramirez or Chavez fights were close just bad decisions, Whitaker/McGirt 1 was competitive but a clear win. The only real close fight Whitaker had prior to the ODLH loss was Rivera 1 which is comparable to Mayweather/Maidana 1.

So where are all these close fights Whitaker had in his prime ? Whitaker never had a close fight in his prime that he was fortunate to get the decision unlike Mayweather/Castillo 1 that more fans had Mayweather losing than winning.

Whitaker only started to have close fights whilst past his prime vs Rivera 1, ODLH. And unlike Mayweather Whitaker fought a young prime ODLH, not a part time ODLH who had only 3 fights in 3 years and would retire 2 fights after Mayweather fight including a beatdown vs Pacquiao.

 

I didn’t even mention Floyd, so I don’t know why you’re rambling about him. He had a close fight with Castillo that he rightfully won and rematched for good measure.

Whitaker had a bunch of close fights. I don’t care about how his prime is bracketed because I don’t give passes on ATG lists for guys who stuff coke up their nostrils instead of going to the gym.

Chavez and Ramirez were obviously close if Whitaker didn’t get Ws on the official cards. We aren’t talking about Lewis against Holyfield. We’re talking about a guy with pretty defense who tended to not take over fights using punches, which is how you win on the cards.

 

He had a bunch of close fights "past his prime" which was clearly after 1995 against Rivera 1st time, the poor performance vs Hurtado in which he was losing before KO, and then the loss to ODLH, that was primarily the only real close fights he had and that period is considered past Whitaker's prime. Age is just a number and fighters age in different ways due to their lifestyle, their actual style in the ring which can be more taxing than others see Tyson, and many other factors.

I brought up Mayweather because you're a fan of his and give him alot of credit for winning close fights, and yet Mayweather won most of his close fights in a defensive manner pot shotting which is primarily what Whitaker did. And yet you're discrediting Whitaker for getting robbed in fights where he did exactly the same as Mayweather. Except the only difference is Whitaker beat Chavez, Ramirez 1, far more clearly than the likes of Mayweather beat Castillo 1, Maidana 1. And also Mayweather got the benefit of the doubt because it was in Las Vegas and Whitaker fought Ramirez in France and Chavez in Texas.

Would Mayweather of got the benefit of doubt in a controversial decision where the other opponent is clearly the aggressor and landed more power punches ? aka Maidana, Castillo, if it wasn't in Las Vegas ?

You could say Chavez, Ramirez 1, are competitive fights to an extent but close fights ? i don't think so.
