What happens when two iron-willed, undefeated champions meet at the peak of their powers? You get one of the greatest contests boxing has ever seen, an absolute blood-and-guts war that The Ring Magazine dubbed not only the best of 1990, but the pinnacle of the entire decade. Set for March 17th, 1990 at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel, the fight between Julio Cesar Chavez and Meldrick Taylor was one of the most anticipated fights of the era. Was this clash the best fight of the 90`s? The Modern Martial Artist This content is protected This content is protected
This fight sort of represents two approaches to boxing. Chavez fights like a professional, takes his time breaking you bit by bit, all business all damage. Taylor is the Olympic boxer, the high level amateur system. TNT punches at the end of his range not through it, racking up points, shoe shining, working every round with a short sighted sort of approach in the bout. Make no mistake, I respect the hell out of Taylor, I enjoy watching him A LOT but he was a lot more balls than brains but unquestionably an absolute G.
One of the best I’ve ever seen, What I love is this fight tells you everything about both guys in under an hour and is a great introduction to TNT and Chavez for a new viewer.
Two of my ten favorite fights happened one month apart. Douglas-Tyson and Taylor-Chavez. Watching them unfold live was totally shocking
Great fight, i haven't watched it for a while so will need to revisit it this week. I had Mel a few rounds ahead, despite still admiring Chavez' grounding him down. I wasn't a fan of the stoppage at the time, while still understanding why it was stopped. I just think most world title holders, especially in a much-anticipated unification fight, would have been given the chance to carry on a bit longer- even by Richard Steele, (especially of they fought for King)
