I saw the post fight interview of Liston after beating Henry Clark. He mentions Quarry as a possible future opponent.

How does Quarry do vs the Liston of 1968?

How does Quarry do vs the Liston of 1960?

Quarry will discourage Liston into settling for a decision loss in 1968. He will be made to walk into something big in 1960, though.

I think Quarry has an excellent shot to win in 1968.

I don’t think he hears the bell ending Round 1 in 1960.

You think prime Liston blows him out in 1 round? No way.

Look I have gained a lot of retroactive respect for Quarry, but there’s no fighter who gives up 20-plus pounds and 12 inches of reach and comes right at his opponent while leading with his face and practicing the Rocky Balboa school of defense going to last very long against prime Charles Liston.

Even in '68, I'd still take Liston to beat Quarry. Quarry may have been the better fighter at that point, but it's a styles thing. With that defense, and propensity to cuts, it's going to be a long night for Quarry. Quarry simply can't afford to take Liston's punches like he could guys like Ellis.

"But but but, Foster, Lyle, and Shavers." None of these guys were anywhere near as skilled, accurate, or fundamentally sound as even a '68 Liston.

Prime Jerry beats 1968 Liston by decision but loses to 1960 Sonny by 4th round KO. We now believe Liston didn't really want to fight anyone as good as Quarry in 1968. He was taking matches only against opponents he knew he could beat.

I might still go with Liston. Quarry was still a bit raw in 1968 and Sonny still had that lengthy jab and power.

Sure. And I really think Liston batters him in a 1 sided battering, but I don't know if it can happen in a single round.

Liston in about four would be my pick. One is optimistic.

Maybe so but again if we're talking 1960 Liston, we are talking absolute peak Liston. And that's a tall, tall, TALL order for Jerry Quarry. Quarry would wade right in and start throwing leather, but IMO peak Liston is just too big, just too strong and just too mean for Quarry, plus his boxing skills (again, this is often overlooked when people discuss Liston) IMO were vastly superior to Quarry's. It might go past one but it's not going far past one.

Liston carves his face up with the jab and stops him late, that’s 1968, he was 37 then, 2 years before he got beat by Leotis Martin, which does make a massive difference especially at that age.
1960 Liston destroys him in 3-4 rounds, precise and accurate straight punches and Quarry has no answer, Liston was versatile with the jab, feints, changing the speed, that’s what Quarry’s weakness was, fighters with great jabs, Quarry likes predictable guys who won’t vary things and likes it if they swing with no set up, he could counter them or get inside, get some work off and beat the to the punch, then get back out, if he couldn’t outbox you or the fight had a great jab, he had no chance, he struggled to get past good straight punches with his square on stance.
I’m talking about these versions of Liston vs a prime Quarry, Liston is the worst possible style matchup for Quarry in terms of what would be best for his health.
Interestingly I actually think he gives prime Foreman plenty of issues, more predictable than Liston and not as quick or precise with straight punches.
