They tried open scoring after 4 and 8 rounds some years back and it was largely shite. I think there was a cruiserweight fight (maybe Jean Marc Mormeck), the champ was winning comfortably after 8 rounds and looked on the verge of stopping his opponent. After hearing that he was ahead by a wide margin on the cards after 8 rounds, he took his foot off the gas and cruised through the last 4 rounds. It completely killed off any excitement in those last 4 rounds. Something does need doing with scoring, though. It is far too subjective.
I see Bivol in retreat and Beterbiev imposing his will on Bivol. There's no way Bivol won 2 out of the last 3 rounds and your the only person I've seen have that score in final 3 rounds. Even @CST80 who thought Bivol won the fight had Beterbiev winning 2 out of the 3 final rounds.
Yeah, I appreciate that alternating swing rounds is not to the letter of the law, I do it purely to try and weed out my own bias and be as objective as I can. I agree that scoring could do with being revamped - and although I know that 10-10 rounds are acceptable, they are generally frowned upon, and especially with fights like last night, I think they have validity and shouldn't be as frowned upon maybe. I also think in terms of the judges - if all 3 judges have a pre-disposition to an aggressive fighter that pushes the fight, then the defensive fighter is at an instant disadvantage. Of course, there is nothing really to be done there as judges won't admit to any preferences in this area i'd guess.
Yea mormeck vs bell. In the first fight bell came from behind to stop mormeck and as you said he heard the scores in the rematch and disengaged ruining the final third of the bout
round 8 was for BTR, Bivol completely gave up second half of the round, was running away and even ate some leather in the end. I thought this one was one of the few rounds easy to score
I'm okay with the difference in opinion. I tend to stick to my opinions based on what I see even if it's unpopular. I did see Beterbiev as the aggressor, but not effective. I still saw Bivol land more punches.
I thought so as well, I watched the round in slowmo to see if I was wrong since most disagree with this. Almost all punches by both fighters were blocked or slipped. I still think Beterbiev then edged it on effective agression and pushing the fight.
Most of those factors only come into play when it’s unclear which fighter landed more effective legal and scoring punches (landing on the front of the body or on the face)…..like the punches and combinations Bivol was landing for the majority of the fight while Beterbiev followed him around throwing pawing jabs (probably due to concern over the return fire he was often getting) or punching his arms and gloves.
thats why i rewatched the fight, some of Bivols flurries were on the gloves, but because he is fast, you need to rewatch. For me perfect result would be a draw and very fast rematch
How about all bouts in which a fighter hasn't won by at least 2 rounds being automatically a draw, I would sooner see a draw than someone losing a fight that many feel he should have won.
