No. The only issue comes with 'half blocked' shots. Many shots last night, particularly from Beterbiev imo, half-connected, glancing off a glove or an arm etc but partially connecting with Bivol, do they count? Do they count as half a scored shot? Did the shot 1/3 connect, 1/2 connect, 3/4 connect etc? This introduces a lot of subjectivity to scoring which may account for a lot of the difference in scoring between the two fighters.
There is no such thing as a "scoring punch". You score rounds. Not punches. In the amateurs you score punches.
I agree. Judges really shouldn't be scoring punches if they are not sure that the punch landed cleanly, though. If a punch lands and everyone starts cheering, but a judge does not have a clear view of it landing cleanly, then they have to ignore that punch. Unfortunately, I imagine some judges take a punt and assume that said punch landed.
It's not the old style of amateur boxing. A few big punches on the guard is definitely nothing than 0 punches returned. Having said that the fight was very close if this is about Bivol vs Beterbiev. Both fighters seemed to be hitting each other's guards in that fight.
Landing 'scoring' punches is a great start towards wining a round. Landing 'non scoring' punches that hit your opponents guard is not.
Easy answer.......NO. Clean punches are supposed to be the only punches that are scored for a fighter. But you also have to understand the judges do not have instant replay or slow motion at their fingertips to make sure they are accurate on what they believe they saw. This is why many questionable results have displayed themselves in judging different bouts. Compubox is SUPPOSED to be a bit more accurate as they have the ability to look at the action with assistance from technology, but lately we have seen them put up some questionable results as well like the Crawford/Madrimov fight in which they had Madrimov landing more punches than Crawford going into the 6th round.....but there is video that shows that Madrimov never threw a single combination until the 7th round all while Crawford would counter with 2 and 3 punch combinations. Or more recently, the Beterbiev/Bivol bout. There were a lot of arm punches that definitely were scored as hits for AB.
Punches aren't really scored like that imo. Arguably the greatest featherweight ever once won a round without landing a single punch so take from that what you will.
They should be. What should be scored is DAMAGE. Vladimir K. could knock people out when he landed on the gloves. So you have a KO shot that is "blocked" and wins the fight, but isn't a "scoring" punch. It's absurd. Anyone who has boxed knows that a blocked shot really only blocks about 1/2 to 2/3 of the punch power. You eat enough shots on the gloves and you're getting battered.
