Only two of these have an argument as being better than Vazquez, maybe three.

Its true that in his time he wasnt thought of as high as now, but hes always been idolized by the public, and the media after he became champ. In Argentina.

After the Fuji fight... but even then, sometimes, he was still very criticized.

I just came across this Luis Federico Thompson interview...

    https://boxinitsprime.blogspot.com/2008/10/thompson-nuestro-dolo-negro.html

When asked about Locche, he says:

    "Te gustaba Nicolino Locche?

    -No, eso no era boxeo."

    No, that was not boxing.

Im from argentina and the judges were giving him only draws in Luna Park because of his style, but the public liked him so much that it saved his carrer. What Thompson said is a minority, i have a magazine of the cervantes fight and everybody was amazed

That being said, Locche's rivals would say what Thompson said all the time

This is what Cherquis Bialo says in the book 100 años de boxeo argentino en 12 combates legendarios. I´ve seen Carlos Irusta saying that he did not like Locche either. As you know, those two were in Luna Park basically every week in those days.. "la prensa especializada sostuvo su posición de la primera hora: “Nicolino es un indescifrable pugilista doméstico que solo podrá ganar dentro de la Argentina”.

But you are right, the fans enjoyed to see him...

"Fue recién en 1963 tras ganarle el título sudamericano al brasileño Sebastiao Nascimento —peso welter junior— cuando recibió su primera ovación en el Luna Park.

From the book, to be fair... it was rather soon that he started to be well liked... by the fans at least, he was well liked from the get go, like you said, 1963 !!
It seems like it was the periodistas that were really not fans of him... or at least suspicious about how far he could go with that style. But the fans enjoyed to watch him, let´s put it this way...

I´m brazilian, keep posting, it would be nice to have an argentine poster here.

Well your proof is definetly pretty conclusive, just that i have an el grafico article at home written the day after the first fight with Cervantes and the writer and everybody he interviews is amazed by Locche, not to mention that my grandma and most people around that time get a twinkle in the eye when they hear about locche. But if its writen in the book by some of the top writers of the time, then its true that criticts were spectical.
Thanks man, i don't know much about boxing apart from the old heavies but i like it and there are definetly some hidden gems in the lower weight classes.

No, you were correct that the fans enjoyed watching him, and the harsh words came from writters. We don´t seem to disagree, by the time he fought Cervantes those people that criticized him had to accept the fact that they were wrong about the man.

Having easy acess to El Graficos must be cool, I have a few, I tried to get a hold of those old Guia Pugilisticas from way back then but those pelotudos from ebay ****ed up my order..

Yes, I do. Other writters wrote the book with him, it is 12 fights. I know Martinez vs Chavez Jr was big in your country, but I don´t like to see it included there... Chavez Jr ? Really ? C´mon. Put Martinez vs Williams then !
