Wilder, and it's not close. In fact, in 45 years of following boxing it's hard to recall a fighter who has been more hyped who fought such atrocious "opposition," for as long as Wilder did

Dominated who though? He unified only once against Easter in what remains his biggest career highlight and his opposition left a lot to be desired, like fights with Linares, or Loma, not to say he was solely to blame, there were, as always, a lot of moving parts but the fact he never fought either hurts his legacy. I'm not saying he's a bad fighter, far from it, but when you compare how acclaimed he was for a time to how much he actually accomplished against credible opposition, the two don't line up. The hype he got outweighs his career and people rate him based off of eye-test and multi-weight accomplishments when in reality he seldom really took on the biggest challenges or even bothered to defend the titles he won.

If we're defining it by how much hype they got, relative to their actual skill level, then it's Anthony Joshua no question

Not a bad champion, just decent. But you had a significant number of his fanboys on social media, in internet forums like this one, in real life, claiming he was an ATG and that he would be competitive against the greats, like Ali, Lewis, Holmes etc.

Guys like Broner, Wilder etc were way overhyped too but no one serious actually claimed they were ATGs like Joshua's fans did with AJ. Fair play to Eddie Hearn because he genuinely had millions of people believing AJ was one of the greats.

Adrien Broner could have been the one.
Out of the all the fighters in MMA and Boxing he had the biggest internet presence. He was the first to have a YouTube channel and promote HIMSELF!!
Al Haymon and HBO couldn't pull the type of hype for him that Worldstarthiphop did with 1 video. Self promotion is just as important as commercial marketing and AB was proof.

People who believed in AJ & Adrien Broner DKSAB. Broner is even worse than AJ. He did prove he was tough as nails going the distance with El Chino but off that the most amazing goof that followed was even Floyd decided to underestimate Chino (as a Khan duck in reality) and got himself in trouble in that 1st bout.

    Haye?

He won European, WBC, WBA, WBO and Ring CW titles and the WBA HW title all within 24 fights
He was the top CW and became a top 3 HW

    Amir Khan.

Have we forgotten when deluded Brits insisted he'd beat Mayweather?

In reality, Khan was a solid--but certainly not special-- fighter with fast hands, a porous defense, and a dubious chin.

    Makhmudov, Hrgovic.

Gassiev, Wallin. These 2 still have avid worshippers in this forum.

Why was he so liked? I always thought he was unlikable douche bag with limited skills being used as a tool to make promoters and TV networks money. I just never understood they hype
