This content is protected Ruben Olivares was 61-0 at one point with I believe 58 knockouts. Interestingly Jackson's entire career was 61 fights. Ruben hopped to featherweight from bantam and was still knocking out tough, world class fighters. His body shot KO of the truly iron chinned Jose Luis Ramirez when he was all but washed up is one of my white whales footage wise. Olivares had a 88% KO ratio over 105 fights where as Julian's sits at 89% over 61 bouts. There are other hellish lower weight punchers that would give anyone a run for their money in terms of raw power. Bantamweight Jesus Pimentel (Who Olivares knocked out) had 67 knockouts over 82 career bouts, mirroring Julian's 89%. Bantam/Super Bantam Jaime Garza had 44 knockouts in 54, at a staggering 92%. There's also Bantamweight champion Carlos Zarate, with 63 knockouts in 70 bouts. A mind numbing 95%. My sleeper pick for hardest pure puncher ever at bantam just might be Alfonso Zamora, who had 32 knockouts in 33 wins. A insane 96.97 knockout percentage for the Olympic silver medalist. What other fighters belong in this prodigious group of punchers, statistically?
I assume you've got the knock out percentages from Boxrec, which represent the percentage of wins, not fights, won by knockout. I.e. Zarate's 63 stoppage wins in 70 fights represents a 90% KO rate. Of the fights he won, 95% were by stoppage. Jimmy Wilde's 98 KO wins in 142 fights are remarkable given he was a minimumweight by modern standards often fighting much bigger men. Edwin Valero won all 27 of his fights by KO. Naseem Hamed won 31 of his 37 fights by stoppage.
Gomez’ 32 fight KO streak is notable, and he maintained his high KO percentage during a lengthy reign at 122. KO percentages tend to drop off at world level, even for devastating punchers. Gomez kept knocking people out until he moved up on weight.
John Mugabi was 25-0 all ko's at one point in his career. Retired with 42 wins, 39 ko's 7-8 losses if I'm remembering right. very impressive ko percentage.
Ricardo Moreno had 60 wins with 59 of them by KO but the guys he stopped weren't all that great. The best guys he fought he lost to.
Beterbiev is 26-0 with 25 ko. That said, while he obviously punches very hard, I don't think he has that sort of touch of death that some boxers have in their hands. The closest guy to that in recent years was probably a dude like Lemieux. Guys dropped like they'd been shotgunned when he landed flush. Unfortunately his boxing skills were not on par to his power.
Was Lopez the only guy to ever have Campas on the deck? I know Trinidad almost killed him but somehow he never went down in that one.. and we're talking about a centurion who didn't know how to do anything but scrap and brawl. Anyone remember this one? One of those fights no one ever brings up. This content is protected Speaking of hard hitting Mexicans around middle... how about Rubio? He had an impressive stoppage ratio himself. Never thought he got the credit he deserved for taking out a undefeated Lemieux, himself a killer puncher.
I don’t recall any fights where Campas got decked but I wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t ever put on the canvas. That guy was such a tough hombre. I’ll have to check out that fight you mentioned! Campas has never been in a boring fight. His fight with John Duddy is another spectacular scrap he was in.
Do you know how nerve racking it must’ve been to be a rampaging “Bazooka” Gomez victim? Looking at his record and being a late title defence would feel like the walk to the electric chair not the ring… you’re not coming out unchanged by the experience and he’s been partying for weeks, you’re here to flip the bill. Whatever I think of his skills he hurt people badly.
