Matthew Saad Muhammad vs John Conteh 1

    1 Muhammad
    2 Conteh
    3 Conteh
    4 Muhammad
    5 Muhammad
    6 Conteh
    7 Conteh
    8 Conteh
    9 Conteh
    10 Muhammad
    11 Muhammad
    12 Conteh
    13 Conten
    14 Muhammad 10-7 2 knockdowns
    15 Muhammad

    142-141 Muhammad

Not your typical Muhammad type brawl but a very good technical fight all the way through fought at a good pace. I thought Conteh had the edge coming into the last 2 rounds his defence and jab were really on point he made Muhammad miss a ton of punches and was very active with the jab. Muhammad did land the harder punches but i don't think he was landing enough of them, and i thought Conteh was outboxing Muhammad in a competitive fight. But Muhammad being the warrior that he is made a great rally in the last 2 rounds to just pull it on my card by 1 point although i had Conteh ahead in rounds 8-7.

The big talking point is obviously the banned substance which was basically like concrete that helped stopped the bad cut on Muhammad's left eye. If i'm being honest apart from the headbutt in the 5th round which didn't actually cause that cut on Muhammad's left eye, i thought Conteh fought a rather clean fight and i didn't really see him regularly using the head. I think Conteh was a bit hard done by here and he might of actually won the fight on cuts had the illegal substance not been used.

@My dinner with Conteh I'd be interested to hear your thoughts since I'm guessing you're a Conteh fan based on your name.

I recently rewatched the great middleweight title fight from 1983 Hagler-Duran.

    Quite an entertaining chess match.

Didnt keep a card but thought Marvelous Marv won it comfortably.Still Duran was the first challanger to take Hagler the distance on his first 160 fight no less.

    For me it's near to a draw,but it's a win-win, Duràn had a good record installed,and Marvin retains title.

It was the cornermen..Miranda from what I read wanted to keep fighting.

Miranda was only stopped once in 46 contests. Not bad at all.

Verno Phillips v Kasim Ouma I

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Phillips
    Round 3: 10-9 Ouma
    Round 4: 10-9 Phillips
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Ouma
    Round 7: 10-9 Ouma
    Round 8: 10-0 Phillips
    Round 9: 10-8 Ouma (scores a knockdown)
    Round 10: 10-9 Ouma

Total: 97-94 Ouma (actual scores: 97-93, 96-93 and 95-94 all for Ouma)

Oh, man, what a 10-rounder! It was Ouma's short, jolting punches against Phillips' sparser but explosive punching, and the crowd was the big winner as they put on quite the contest. Hope the rematch is as good because that will be next. A definite recommendation. I wouldn't steer you guys wrong.

D, this was my card when I last viewed it and what I wrote:

Matthew Saad Muhammad v John Conteh I (light heavyweight title)

I was a huge Conteh fan back in the day and may have leaned a little towards him back then, feeling he deserved it. Watching it now more impartial I can say that although John's defense was brilliant, he relied too heavily on it and needed to be busier offensively. There were times that were screaming out for a Conteh counter when he seemed to be more content with ducking away and resuming jabbing. Anyways here we go. 10 point must system.

    Round 1: 10-9 Saad
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Saad
    Round 5: 10-9 Saad
    Round 6: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 7: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 8: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 9: 10-9 Saad
    Round 10: 10-9 Saad
    Round 11: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 12: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 13: 10-10 Even
    Round 14: 10-7 Saad (2 knockdowns)
    Round 15: 10-9 Saad

145-141 Saad Muhammad (actual scores: 146-142, 146-141 and 144-143 all for MSM)

Of course, the fan in me will always say that the Conteh from '74 would have taken Saad. But regardless, two great warriors.

It's not out of the question to think Conteh could beat Muhammad at his absolute best he was basically a one handed fighter at this point. And I think without the illegal substance Conteh would've won on cuts anyway regardless.

I gave this one a re-watch. One of the best examples you'll ever find of chin vs power at the lower weight classes.

Thanks for the heads-up on this, M. I was recently watching another Verno fight and couldn't help but notice a similarity in Gaspar Ortega's style with Verno. Not a true banger but knew how to whip his shots in using speed and heft and both always knew how to make a fight entertaining.

Russell, checked it out about a year or two ago as well. Good fight but we all knew how it was going to end. This is what i wrote:

    Marcos Villasana v Jaime Garza

Poor Jaime. When I saw this matchup I didn't think it was going to be good for him but it would be for the fans (and Villasana). Garza was a Bob Satterfield-type of fighter. He could knock you dead but had a susceptible jaw. And against Villasana who had a great jaw and could pop, this didn't bode well. Indeed, Garza was down once in round 1 & 2 before Villasana lowered the boom in the 5th. I was nice to Garza, giving him the 3rd when he actually boxed well and watched himself, but it was a matter of time. I had a score of 39-35 for Villasana after 4 rounds.

Jaime Garza could really crack. Looked like being a real star but Juan Meza ruined that with one thunderous hook (after getting off the mat himself).

Villasana is one of my favourites, fan of Paul Hodkinson but was so glad when Marcos won the 1st fight.

Took the punches from punchers like Azumah Nelson (twice), Esparragoza, Garza, peak Fenech and Hodkinson without falling.

Twice stopped on cuts with one against Mario Miranda when Villasana (according to Boxrec) was on the verge of scoring a knockout in front of Miranda´s fans.

    What a chin.

That's a good write-up. But yeah, impending doom against someone like Villasana.

Have you seen all of these Danny Lopez bouts?

I don't know if it's a hot take or not but I legitimately think Marcos had P4P one of the best chins I've ever seen. He just did not budge, and he wasn't because he was a defensive expert who slipped everything. He had a brick head.
