Norton avenged his defeat against Garcia when he was green. Dempsey and Johnson didn't have amateur record, unlike Liston. And then cheating substances on his gloves and quit twice. Not impressive!
Liston was even greener and also avenged his defeat, keep trying. your allegation has long been debunked. Patterson was blinded twice? Williams? Folley? Harris? Maybe Foreman mentions during their sparring sessions that he has never met a stronger boxer?
In other words you can't name a single person "close to Martin" who said that he suffered a detached retina against Wendell Newton. All you can do is keep repeating Russell Peltz's evidence-free theory that he might have done. I'll repeat - Leotis Martin himself never wavered from his account that the injury happened against Liston. In 1970, after having surgery to repair the damage, he still had hopes of a one-off return to the ring against Joe Frazier for the title. If he carried his eye injury into his victories against Roger Russell and Liston, why not say so? It would have supported his claim that he was still a legitimate opponent for Frazier. But he didn't. Yet again, he confirmed that the injury happened against Liston. https://ibb.co/CQ7MR4s Quote the post where I said that, or stop making stuff up.
Excellent post. Here's an interview he did about two months later, where he says he feels fine, and wants to come back to fight Frazier. https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-philadelphia-inquirer/145569991/ He said he was the number 1 contender but that can't be true? I think he was number 3 when he fought Liston though?
Was Dempsey regularly whipped by his brute of a father that left permanent scars on his back ? Did Dempsey have to endure the appalling racism that Liston would have endured during the pre-civil rights era in the USA ? The answer is no.
Yes, the comparison is flawed.Liston showed huge courage in fighting with a broken jaw in only his 8th fight. To show such courage with such a lack of experience is creditworthy. No doubt if Liston had cancelled a championship fight because of a bloody nose you would waste no time in accusing Sonny of lacking heart.
And yet an inexperienced Sonny Liston fought several rounds with a broken jaw while Marciano cancelled a championship fight because of a bloody nose.
To state that Dempsey gained no experience as a fighter simply because he had no formal amateur career is extremely naive.
That's true, he was #3 (according to the WBA) when he fought Liston, but the win pushed Martin into the #2 spot behind Frazier. Then Frazier beat Ellis for the title, which allowed Martin to take over the #1 spot. So he's right, he would have been #1 in April 1970.
Holy **** I’m embarrassed to have not known this. I assumed he would’ve been completely removed from the ratings when announcement of his retirement arose.
Again avenging defeat against someone 30 lbs lighter than you and far worse fighter than Ross isn't a great achievement. Williams and Patterson? Two of the worst chins in boxing history with Morrison 3rd? Foreman? You know that Foreman is humble guy and you're comparing 18 years old undeveloped kid who wasn't still a pro with pro fighters that was a champion? Foreman also said that he was scared of Tyson and Frazier, do you really believe him?
No one know that retina problems was there but it started there. Btw I quote two sources Peltz and another site and you're best answer was that it was after the Liston fight because injury got worse? Just listen your logic, it makes no sense at all. How do you know and how he could know? Is he a doctor, because inside brain or eye damage can not sometimes be felt by someone who had them. Again this supports my theory that he was injured in the fight with Newton while Liston just finished the job.
