I know a lot of people say now that Wilder was always over rated and I personally wouldn't rank him in the top 10 of active fighters at heavyweight.

But I remember not too long ago a bit of back and forth between Wilder and Miller where it was more or less accepted by both sides that Wilder had knocked Miller out in sparring. Miller seemed to even acknowledge his inferiority to Wilder at one of the Saudi pressers where he said to Joshua "I'd put you in hospital and Wilder would put you in a morgue".

Also I remember it was said that during Miller's preparation for come back fights that he was dropped heavily a few times by Fury and he sort of made the excuse (perhaps a genuine excuse) that he wasn't fully fit after the lay off when sparring Fury in a youtube interview.

Anyway just thought this topic was a bit of interesting banter and adds weight to the school of thought that yes Wilder did cherry pick but was also world class and ruined by too many hard fights as right now I'd heavily favour Miller to beat Wilder.

If anyone thinks a long reigning world champion who medaled at the Olympics wasn’t a world class fighter, regardless of “cherry picking” they don't know much about boxing…. and probably lack common sense as well.

Your last statement is a balanced and fair perspective.

What is the obsession with ‘sparring’ stories on here?

They are irrelevant because sparring isn’t actually fighting.

This must have been before Miller started training in his local pharmacy.

The issue with these sparring stories is they're almost never representative of a real fight. More often than not guys are working on something specific and aren't fighting like they would in a real match. Sparring also doesn't have the pacing of a real fight.

Yeah, even if the intent is there, many guys just perform better in an actual bout (and many perform better in the gym and struggle in bouts)

I heard a "witness" who said that Wilder got much the better of Miller but Miller held his ground and was not stopped.

Miller also said that Joshua didn't have one punch KO power but Wilder did, this was before Joshua fought Ruiz. According to Chris Andre Boxing there was an interview between Wilder and some guy who seemed to acknowledge via body language that he'd seen Wilder stop Miller in the gym and send him to hospital. Miller was considered to be better than Andy Ruiz before the Joshua fight, given about 2x the chance of beating Joshua and Miller is probably considered better than Ruiz given their fight.

Usually we don't have a reliable, independent source to verify them either. Most are about as reliably correct as fishing stories.

The reality is that Wilder was a dumb fighter with explosive speed and power and probably a lot of PED help. He wasn't a finely tuned machine like Wlad, but he was very dangerous. People just don't like admitting that because they love AJ and/or hate Fury.

It's all very simple in the end. If Wilder WASN'T very dangerous, AJ wouldn't have avoided that fight his entire career. Do people realise AJ is now 35? Do people actually think AJ couldn't have made that fight if he wanted to after basically a decade on the circuit? It's laughable.
Wilder is the only one who has ever called for that fight directly in recent years.

Also, Fury wouldn't have tried to get out of the third fight with Wilder (rightly so). The third fight showed how dangerous Wilder is despite being technically inferior to Fury. Fury went on to give Usyk his hardest fight, even a weathered version of Fury.

It's weird how people think you just have to 'use skillz' against Wilder and that makes him a bum and a comfortable W, just because old Wilder got beat a few times now. Fury still got nailed four times with all his skillz and others did have skillz against Wilder too and it wasn't enough.

The AJ Wilder fight was a coin flip, with Wilder having a good chance of doing what Dubious did. That's why Hearn was terrified of that matchup.

Potential is irrelevant if you never put it to use.

Wilder can’t box and was so bad and just a one trick pony that Hearn STILL wont put Joshua in the ring with him, outside of a Fury v Joshua fight the next biggest fight out there for Joshua is still WILDER ! Now before anybody starts throwing the Wilder ducked Joshua narrative let’s remember that Joshua also ducked Wilder and for far more money and with a guaranteed rematch and to there credit both fighters admit ducking each other .

He medaled at the Olympics, became a world champion as a pro, had a trilogy with one of the best heavyweights of his era, and made lots of money….

And people are saying he had the potential to do more than that.
